John W. Dennis was born on 25 October 1838 in Malahide, Elgin, London District, Ontario, Canada. He and
Louisa Michael were married on 2 October 1862 in Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.
1 He died on 13 May 1930, at age 91, in Lapeer County, Michigan. He was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery (Lot H 07) Lapeer County, Michigan.
2 John W. Dennis resided South Dorchester Twp, Elgin Co. He was a Carpenter/Engineer. The 1870 Michigan Census identifies John Dennis as employed in "sash mill."
According to the 1900 Michigan census, John entered the United States in 1865. In 1872, John owned the Michael and Dennis Saw and Shingle mill one mile south of the City of Lapeer. He bought the farm of his father-in-law, Archibald Michael, in 1886 when the latter went to Scotland where he died three years later. Archibald and his son Robert introduced growing alfalfa in Michigan. Grace Noad has a photo of John and Louisa Dennis and Peter Stover and wife Martha Dennis.
From: History of Lapeer Count, Michigan, published by H.R. Page & Company, 1884, p54:
"J.W. Dennis is a native of Canada and was born in 1838 and is by occupation a carpenter and engineer. He came to Lapeer in 1865 and now owns ten acres of valuable land near the city on section 7, upon which he has good buildings. Ultimately, he expects to devote the entire place to the raising of small fruits. Was married in 1862, to Miss Louisa Michael, who also is a native of Canada. They have four children."
