He was a lifetime high school football coach, and went on to become one of the most successful high school football head coaches in Texas history with a career record of 224-110-4. He was the head coach in Santa Anna, Merkel, Crosbyton, Spur, Lindale, West Rusk, Bremond, Bangs, and Gravitt, Arkansas. He was inducted into the Texas High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 2002. He lived all over the state of Texas, but he made Bremond his home. He coached both of his sons in Bremond and led both their teams to a State Finalist appearance in football. He enjoyed farming, gardening, and watching his grandchildren play their respective sports, at which they all excel. Both of his sons and daughters in law followed in his footsteps in the education profession becoming athletic directors/football coaches and teachers. He was able to see Silas play in a State Championship Football Game, Ellie to win a district championship basketball title in varsity basketball as a freshman, and Claire and Silas, both high school juniors, to qualify for the State Track Meet just this past week, both at the 3A level. We know Pawpaw will be watching and cheering them on when they compete in all their future athletic and scholastic endeavors. He will always be remembered for his devotion to his wife of 52 years, his warm humor, twinkle in his eye, dry wit, kindness, and compassion. He instilled the values of pride, honor, plain old-fashioned hard work, and above all, faith, to several generations of students here in Bremond and far beyond.
