DODGE CITY---Hugh E. Shira, 69, died July 20, 1993, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born Dec. 19, 1923, at Dodge City, the son of Lowell Ray and Edith E. Crayhead Shira. He was a Dodge City Senior High School graduate. A lifetime Dodge City resident, he was employed by Atchison, Topeka & Anta Fe Railway for 42 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First Christian Church, was a 32nd degree Mason, was past master of St. Bernard Lodge No. 222, was past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 97, was past high priest of the Royal Arch Masons Dodge City Chapter No. 75, past exellent master of the Cryptic Masons Countil No. 16; was past commander Knights Templar Dodge City Chapter No. 35, was past master watchman of the shepards of the White Shrine of JerusalemMizpha Shrine No. 9, was a sponser of the Knights Templar Eve Foundation, was past president of the Dodge City Shrine Club, was Chairman of the Dodge City Shrine Club Cripled Chilgren, was a member of the Knights of the York Cross of Honor, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Loyal Order of Moose, , and the American Legion, all at Dodge City, and was a member of the Midian Shrine and the Consistory, both of Wichita. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. On Feb. 6, 1943, he married Virginia Wintamute at Lewis. She survives. Other susvivors include: a son, Fred J., Jarratt, Va.; two daughters, Janet L. Koehn, Montezuma, and Sheila R. Eakin, Garden City; brother, Charles, Searcy, Ark.; and seven grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, Dodge City, with Larry Williams presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Swain Funeral Home, Dodge City. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with Masonic Graveside Rites by St. Bernard Lodge No. 222 AF & AM with a Knights Templar escort. Memorials may be sent to the Dodge City Shrine Club Cripled Children Fund in care of the funeral home.
