William Baptist (Bob) Hardy was a Chemical Research Manger/Consultant in American Cyanamid Company.
3 William Baptist Hardy, age 92, died on June 16th at Forwood Manor where he had resided since 2007. A retired organic chemist and seventy year member of the American Chemical Society, he was the holder or co-holder of over 100 U.S. patents, primarily in the areas of vat dyes and intermediates, ultraviolet light absorbers and plastics additives.
Born the eldest of four children in Bloomfield, Iowa, he attended a one-room schoolhouse for his elementary education. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1938 and his Ph.D. there in 1940. The same year, he moved to Bound Brook, New Jersey to work for the Calco Chemical Company, later a division of American Cyanamid. During his career, he served as the leader of various research groups. He was the Manager of Vat Dye Research, Dyes and Intermediates, and Plastics Additives and Manager of Research Services. Upon his retirement from American Cyanamid, he worked as a practicing consultant for ten years.
He was an enthusiastic golfer and a member of the Raritan Valley Country Club in Somerset County, New Jersey. He and his wife, Charlotte, also enjoyed travelling extensively around the world during his retirement years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Charlotte, his son William Thomas Hardy and wife, Janet of Fairfax Station, Virginia, daughter Christine Sudell and husband, William of Wilmington, Delaware, five grandchildren, Stephanie Curtice of Fairfax, Virginia; Kurt Hardy of Gulfport, Florida; Andrea Davey and husband, Matthew of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Pamela Park and husband, Phil of Wilmington, Delaware, and Catherine Shaw and husband, Matthew of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Curtice and William Davey.
A service will be held at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington at 3:00 pm on Saturday June 20, 2009.
