Mrs. Wintermute Heart Victim

Mrs. Adah May Wintermute, 63, active in Portland school and community affairs for many years, died Thursday at the family residence 1724 S.E. 56th avenue. Death resulted from a heart condition that had curtailed her activities for the part seven montths.

Mrs. Wintermute was born May 17, 1884, in Chillicothe, O., the daughter o f Mr. and Mrs. Frank Matthews. The family moved to Salt Lake City ten years later, and then to Portland in 1905. On June 30, 1909, she was married to Charles C. Wintermute and four years later moved into the home he built for her in Mt. Tabor, where they have lived ever since.

Mrs. Wintermute's interest in school affairs dated from the time her two sons entered Glencoe school. There, as president of the Parent Teacher Association, she pioneered the city's school cafeteria system. In time she became president of the Washington high school Parent Teacher Ass ociation, University of Oregon Mothers club, and Portland chapter, Beta Theta Pi Mothers club.

An early-day member of Portland Golf club, she headed their women's activities in 1933 and in 1939 served as president of Women of Rotary. Early in the war Mrs. Wintermute became interested in USO work, and sparked inauguration of the depot canteen, where she worked every day until failing health intervered. Her service as secretary-treasurer of the Travelers Aid society, started in 1944, ended in November of last year when she was confined to Providence hospital.

Surviving, in addition to the widower, are Mrs. Wintermute's mother, Mrs. Alma Felton, and two sons, Charles R. and Robert L. Wintermute, all of Portland.
