Knowlton Prebyterian Churchyard - "Isaac S. Smith d. June 29, 1854, aged 75.11.15; relict Catharine, d. Dec. 5, 1856, aged 74.0.7
All sons were prosperous farmers and lived in the Township except Isaac F. who took over his father's mill property, also acres of land, later selling to Martin Painter and then locating in Kalamazoo, Michigan and buried there. The parents, also other sons, are buried in Knowlton Church Yard except Joshua who is in the Quaker Cemetery nearby. Sally Ann married Simeon Cooke of Marksboro where she was buried after living past 88 years; she was small, weighed only 84 pounds at time of her death. (Roscoe Smith notes)
"Copied from notes of James Edgar Smith" - "Isaac Smith, Sr., a millwright, after marriage to Rachel Wintermute, settled in Blairstown Township, N.J., buying a farm, also erecting a grist mill, the little settlement being named Smith's Mills, later Painter's Mills, then Kalarama."
"Wintermute Family History" by J.B. Wintermute, 1900 - date of birth July 14, 1778.
"History of Sussex & Warren Counties" pub. 1881, compiled by James P. Snell, p. 640 - "Blairstown....The exact date of its settlement by civilized man will probably never be known, but there can be no doubt about its being among the earlier settlements within the limits of Warren County. The original name of the place, so far as we have been able to learn, was "Smith's Mills." Many years before the Revolutionary war a man of that familar name-Smith-had a large grist mill and a saw-mill on the grounds now belonging to Hon. John I. Blair." (Not this Isaac Smith) P. 653 - "The next grist-mill in this township was built by Isaac Smith in 1831-32, now owned by the heirs of Martin Painter, and know as 'Painter's Mills," and located south of Walnut Valley Post Office."
John William Smith

Parents
Biography
John William Smith was born in May 1803 in Knowlton, Warren, New Jersey. He and
Catharine Ann (Katie) Kinney were married about 1825.
1 He died on 27 September 1862, at age 59, in Stillwater, Sussex, New Jersey. He was buried in Knowlton Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Knowlton, Warren, New Jersey.
The Kinney family originated in Holland and first settled near Stroudsburg, Pa. We presently know nothing of them. John W. and Catherine Smith had one son, Isaac Snover Smith (1835-1919) and three daughters: Sarah; Catherine (Mrs. John Kist - no issue); and Rachael. Sarah and Rachael did not marry. John W. was injured early in his career as a millwright and lived quietly in Kalarama thereafter. (Roscoe Smith notes) (I bet his middle name was Wintermute. LP)
