David Gesell Wagstaff 1924-2006
David Gesell Wagstaff passed away Nov. 3, 2006, at the age of 82, from complications of pneumonia.
Mr. Wagstaff was born in Portland Sept. 25. 1924. He attended Woodmere Grade School, Franklin High School and graduated from Oregon State College ( now Oregon State University) in Corvallis, class of 1950.
During World War ll, David served in the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division (Ski Troops) 86th Regiment C Company- 5th Army, serving in the Po Valley and Apennines. In 1940, the War Department worked with the American Alpine Club and the National Ski Patrol to develop equipment and training for winter and mountain warfare. Out of this partnersip, the U.S. Army "Ski Troops" were activated, composed of ski buffs and outdoorsmen. Drafted at 18 1/2, David volunteered with a required three letters of recommendation and ski experience. He was accepted and went to Camp Hale, entering active duty July 22, 1943.
During tough high altitude training in the Colorado Rockies, the 10th also tested cold weather equipment designs. Clothing was white reversible to keep them camoflaged in the snow. They trained at Camp Hale, Colorado and Camp Swift, Texas, arriving in Italy on December 23, 1944. From there they went into the mountains near Florence to take Rive Ridge from the Germans. They went on to attack Mt. Belvedere and other Northeastern peaks. David returned to the U.S. Aug. 7, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, EAME Ribbon and two Bronze Service Stars.
As did other 10th men, David spent free time skiing and climbing around the Pacific Northwest once he returned home. He participated in a first ascent variation of Castle Crags route on Mt. Hood and formations of Smith Rock, and assisted mountain rescues with the Wyeast'ers and a budding climbing community. In 1948, 45 members of the Oregon State Mountain Club summited Three Fingered Jack, led by Dave Wagstaff and Ross Petrie. Records at the time indicate that it was the largest group ever to scale the peak, doubling the record set by the Mazamas. Many in that party became David's lifelong friends.
David was an active member of his Northwest Chapter of the 10th Mountain Division, maintaining lifelong friendships. Beginning in 1998, David began corresponding with one of his Gebirgsjager (German mountain infantry) opponents. This correspondence developed into a unique friendship, considering their first contact was only yards apart on the battlefield in the 1940's.
In 1962, he met a fellow hiker/climber in the Trails Club of Oregon, Alice Underwood of Lamberton, Minn., and they were married Dec. 15, 1962, at First Prebyterian Church in downtown Portland. They remained in Portland to raise a family and to enjoy their mutual love of the outdoors. Alice and David recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.
David was employed for many years as a helath physicist by the Oregon State Health Division's Radiation Control Section, retiring in 1985. David went to work inspecting x-ray machines and eventually managed the radioactive materials program under Dr. Marshall Parrot. Over his long career, he was involved in state oversight of radiation sources at local corporations, hospitals, and universities. David's collegues remember an excellent writer, a quick learner, and a fine manager.
David was an active member and elder of Mt. Scott Park Presbyterian Church, member of Wyeast Climbers, the Northwest Chapter of the 10th Mountain Division, and life member of the Trails Club of Oregon.
Mr. Wagstaff is survived by his wife of 43 years, Alice E. Wagstaff; s sister, Janet Squier; a son, Brian and daughter-in-law, Beth; and his son, Bruce and daughter-in-law, Charmin and their children, Evan, Eric, and Sara.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at 2p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at his longtime church home, Mt. Scott Park Presyterian Church, 5512 SE 73rd Ave., Portland, 97206-5273 Phone: 503.771.7553. Flowers for the memorial may be sent to Bateman Carroll, 520 West Powell Blvd., Gresham, OR 97030, 503.665.2128.
