Winifred -Winnie- Mae Kramer Nation was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Long Beach. She passed away of cancer on Jan. 2, 2004, in the loving arms of her husband, Joseph Franklin Nation. Winnie and Frank were married in a hot air balloon 41+2 years ago.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Wayne Kramer of Silver City, Nev., and t wo sisters, Mrs. Willetta Edmiston of Warsaw, Ind., and Dr. Alberta Hanson of Apple Valley. Her six grandchildren are Christa Banta of Carson City, Nev., Clark Kent Kramer of Carson City, Nev., Scott Kramer of Clovis, Tom Kramer of the U.S. Navy and twins, Michelle Williams and Nichelle Fincham of Largo, Fla. She had two great-grandchildren.

Winnie was preceded in death by a son, Dennis, her parents and one sister.

Winnie graduated from Jordan High School in Long Beach and Frank Wiggin Trade School in Los Angeles (custom decorating and wardrobe planning). She also took classes in real estate and jewelry making at Victor Valley College.In 1940, Winnie began employment at J J Newberry's in Long Beach as a -show card- artist. She was a writer in classified ads for the Long Beach Press Telegram from 1959 to 1965. She was advertising manager at t he Wonder Shop of Long Beach for a year. She continued her employment career as director of advertising at West Coast Trade and Business Schoo ls in Lynwood, classified manager for Publisher Association of Compton, classified display advertising for the Victorville Daily Press, advertis- ing account executive at Hemet News in Hemet, studio coordinator for JC Penney in Victorville and sales coordinator+manager of Beverly Bridal and Formal Wear in Victorville. Upon retirement, Winnie did not stop working, but volunteered 1,000 hours at the front desk at Victor Valley Community Hospital. She was active in Professional Women and served as president of Victor Valley Community Concert Association. Also benefiting f rom her tireless gifts of time and talent were the Sun Country Tourism Group in Apple Valley, San Jacinto-Hemet and Victor Valley Business and Professional Women, Convalescent and Rehab Center in Redlands and the American Cancer Society. Her award certificates and plaques are too numerous to list here. Winnie was gifted in handiwork and crafts, which were displayed yearly at the San Bernardino County Fair in Victorville. She garnered many first-place ribbons and best of show for her expertise in crocheting, knitting and Betty Boop collections. Her latest new skills include quilting. Winnie's fingers and hands were constantly in motion. Winnie and her husband, Frank, served together with Apple Valley and Victorville Citizens on Patrol. They also served together as chaplain assistants at Victor Valley Community Hospital, St. Mary Medical Center and Desert Valley Hospital. Winnie and Frank were also very active in their church, First Baptist of Apple Valley. She had served most recently as a d eaconess. Winnie's family would like to thank all the medical and hospice personnel, hospital volunteers and church family who supported them through the past difficult months. A memorial service will be held at 1 p .m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Apple Valley on Nisqually Road near Central Road. Graveside services will be at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Westminster Memorial Park.
