6 Muriel Corbett, 85, died Dec. 31, 2005, at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton. Born in Newton on May 7, 1920, Mrs. Corbett grew up in Newton and the Lake Mohawk section of Sparta. She lived 58 years of her married life in Sparta.
She graduated from Newton High School, attended Cornell University and graduated form Trenton State Teachers' College with a degree in early childhood education. She earned her master's degree in early childhood development from Columbia University. Mrs. Corbett was a kindergarten teacher and also owned The Corner Cupboard gift store in Sparta during the 1950s.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sparta, Mrs. Corbett was known throughout the community for her kind and caring ways. She loved being a homemaker, gardening and cooking. She was a great lover of animals and owned many cats and dogs througout her life.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed swimmming at Lake Saginaw and yearly vacations to Ocean City, Md. One of Mrs. Corbett's greatest pleasures was music and dancing.
A great letter writer, Mrs. Corbett corresponded with eight women from Trenton State Teacher's College from the time she graduated until her death--it was a round robin letter called "The Square Sparrow."
The daughter of the late John W. Vasbinder ad Ethel Coleman Vasbinder, Mrs. Corbett was also predeceased by her husband, William H, Corbett. She is survived by her son, William H. Corbett Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Newton; and her granddaughter, Allison H. Corbett and her fiancee, Colin Schweizer, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
A memorial service will be scheduled in April for Mrs. Corbett and her husband, who died on Oct. 17, 2005. Donations may be made to the Sparta Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 246, Sparta, N.J. 07871 of Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation, 175 High St. Newton N.J. 07860.
