Sioux Falls - Roxy Linden Laur, loving husband and incredible father, was born Dec. 11, 1948 to Doyle and Marian (Hoff) Laur in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1954, he and his family moved to Hartford, SD where Roxy graduated high school in 1967. He attended South Dakota State University and served in the US Army with an honorable discharge.
Roxy began his career working for John Morrell & Co. and also sold real estate for ERA Fines. In 1988 he and business partner Jan Nordby established Empire Car Wash where he warmly greeted every customer and dirty car until his retirement in 2007.
Roxy was united in marriage to Yvonne Louder on Sept. 18, 1976 in Sioux Falls. He devoted his time and love to his family and their Victorian home. With his great wisdom and zeal for life, Roxy shared his enthusiasm for classic rock-and-roll, downhill skiing, and travel with his family.
As a loyal man and dedicated Shriner, Roxy was Potentate in 2005 of the El Riad Shrine Temple. Among many other activities, he was a long-time member of the Clown Unit and the Circus Committee. Roxy was raised a Master Mason on Sept. 21, 1990, served as Master of Unity Lodge #130, and was a member of the York and Scottish Rite. His passion for these organizations continued to be a part of his everyday life.
Thankful and grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Yvonne; daughter Christina (Mark Nuernberger) Laur, Denver, CO; son Aaron (Laurie Clark) Laur, Bonn, Germany; sisters Diane Laur and Sharon Gaddis, Tucson, AZ; and grandson Reese Laur.
After a short illness, Roxy passed away at home with family and friends as the sun set on Feb. 22, 2011. His charismatic smile, superb sense of humor, unforgettable laugh and assuring handshake will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents Doyle and Marian Laur.
Public visitation will begin on Sunday, Feb. 27, 3-5:00 PM, followed by a Masonic Prayer Service at 5:00 PM at the El Riad Shrine Temple (510 S. Phillips Ave, Sioux Falls). The funeral service will be held at First Lutheran Church (327 S. Dakota Ave, Sioux Falls) on Monday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Roxy's name to the El Riad Shrine Loan Equipment Fund.
