Biography

Curtis Waldo Lair was born on 19 August 1902 in Rockford, Floyd, Iowa.1,2 He and Blanche Edith O'Reilly were married on 8 September 1934 in Cresco, Howard, Iowa.3 He died on 16 June 1985, at age 82, in Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota.2 He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Rochester, Olmstead, Minnesota.4
Curtis Waldo Lair was an Owner-Lair's Shoes.3 Curtis W, Kair, 82, of 411 21st. St. S.W., a longtime Rochester resident and former owner of Lair's Shoe Store, died Sunday morning of kidney failure at Rochester Methodist Hospital where he had been hospitalized since Friday. He had been ill since January.

Mr. Lair was born Aug. 19, 1902, in Rochester, Iowa. He moved to West Concord at the age of 8 with his family, then to Rochester when he was 20. He lived here for about six years, moved to Minneapolis for eight years and returned to Rochester in 1934. He married Blanche O'Rielly Smith on Sept. 8, 1934, in Cresco, Iowa. In 1936, he went into partnershp with Arthur Nachriener in the ownership of a shoe store which was located in the Masonic Building. In 1950, Mr. Lair sold his interest in the business to his partner and opened Lair's Shoe Store on Third Street Southwest. He retired and sold the business to his son in 1971.

He was a lifetime member of the Rochester Elks Lodge; a former Rochester Lions Club member, for which he served as district representative and president; Rochester Masonic Lodge, Knights Templar, and Osman Shrine Temple.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Curtis R. of Minneapolis and George A. of Rochester; and four grandchildren. One son preceded him in death.

The funeral is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vine Funeral Home Chapel, with the Elks Lodge Funeral Ceremonial Team officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to p.m. Tuesday and until the time of service Wednesday at Vine Funeral Home Chapel

Blanche Edith O'Reilly was born on November 7, 1910 in Edmonton, Canada to Jack and Elizabeth (Hill) O'Reilly. She died on December 26, 2009 at the Samaritan Bethany Home on 8th.

Blanche moved with her family to Fargo, ND in 1916. She attended schools in Fargo, ND, Virginia, MN, St. Paul, MN and Minneapolis, MN. She graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1929. She married Curtis W. Lair on September 8, 1934 and together they operated Lair's Shoes until they retired in 1969 when their son, George took over the business. Blanche lived in Texas from 1991-2001. She was past president of the B.P.D. Does, the Golden Hill P.T.A., Minnesota Tax Payers Association and the Lady Lions. Most recently she was the developer of Lair's Valley real estate development. She enjoyed playing cards, cruises, traveling and horseback riding.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter-in-law. Survivors include her son, George ( Marie Randall) Lair of Rochester, MN; 4 granddaughters, Susan (Ulo) Vaher of Cincinnati, OH, Roberta Stevens and special friend, Kevin McLauchlin of Rochester, MN, Bridget (Shawn) Lair/Jones of Plains, OH and Kate (Craig) Grochowiska of East Windsor, Conn.; 2 great grandchildren, Matthew Stevens of Rochester and Maya Grochowiska of East Windsor, Conn.; 2 step great grandsons, Patrick (Tracie) Randall of Lakeville, MN and Michael (Natalie) Randall of Elco New Market, MN; and 4 step great grandsons, Phonix and Griffin Jones of Plaines, OH and Chase and Brock Randall of Lakeville, MN.

George Allen (Butch) Lair was born on 4 December 1942 in Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota.1 He and Mary Ellen Lizius were married on 16 September 1967 in Olmsted County, Minnesota.2 He died on 8 June 2012, at age 69, in Miltona, Douglas, Minnesota.3
George Allen (Butch) Lair was an Owner/Operator Lair's Shoes.3 George Allen “Butch” Lair age 69 of Rochester passed away June 8, 2012 at his lake home in Miltona, MN. Born December 4, 1942 in Rochester to Curtis W. & Blanche (O'Reilly) Lair. On January 26, 2008 he married Marie “Ernie” Randall and she survives. Mr. Lair was a Certified Pedorthist and owned and operated Lair’s Shoes from 1970 to 1987. After selling the business in 1987, he and his family moved to Solon, Ohio. There, he worked for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation helping to start their Foot and Ankle Clinic. After his retirement, he returned to Rochester and worked part time for Prosthetic Labs which had purchased his business. He was an avid fisherman and fished the Pro Bass tournaments for many years. He enjoyed and was a very talented woodworker, he loved music and playing guitar. He married Mary Ellen Lizius on September 15, 1967 and she preceded him in death January 30, 2005. Also surviving are his four daughters: Susan E. Vaher (Ulo) of Blanchester, OH; Roberta E. Stevens (Kevin McLaughlin) of Rochester; Bridget M. Lair (Sean Jones) of The Plains, OH; and Kate M. Lair (Wojciech Grochowski)) of East Windsor, CT; 2 stepsons: Patrick James Randall (Tracie) of Lakeville, MN and Michael E. Randall (Natalie) of Elko, New Market; 11 grandchildren: Matthew Stevens, Maya Grochowska, Eleanor and Cathrine Vaher, Io Jones, Phoenix and Griffin Jones, Bridget and Dave McLaughlin, Chase and Brock Randall, and Sophia Randall.
Memorial services will be held 10 AM Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour before the services at the funeral home.
A memorial will be set up for a needy child.
