John Devore Reeder, 71, local artist and co-founder of the Brandywine Arts Festival, died Saturday in Delaware Division after a short illness. He lived at 24 S. Stuyvestant Drive, Edgemoor Terrace.
In 1960, Mr. Reeder helped the Recreation Promotion and Service Department of Parks and Recreation in staging an annual art show and sale in Josephine Gardens, North Brandywine Park. The festival has become an autumn tradition, as hundreds of artists gather each year to display pottery, weaving, woodcarving, paintings and batiks. The festival now includes an art auction, performing artists, and specialty foods. In 1974, the festival was dedicated to Mr. Reeder.
Mr. Reeder retired in 1971 from the former Joseph Bancroft and Sons Co. of Wilmington as safety director and employment manager. He had been with the company for 39 years.
He was also an active member of the Delaware Safety Council, urging the Delaware State Legislature in 1956 to appropriate funds for training student drivers. In addition, he served as president of the council for three terms. He also served on the board of the Wilmington Rotary Club.
He was appointed by former Delaware Governors Elbert N. Carvel and Charles L. Terry Jr. as chairman of the Delaware State Portrait Commission.
He is survived by his wife, Catharine Cella Reeder; a daughter, Joan Marini of Edgemoor Terrace; a sister, Mabel Cosgrove of Newton, N.J., and three grandchildren.
Services will be tomorrow afternoon at 1 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 24th and Market streets. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ursuline Academy Building Fund, 1102 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilmington 19806.

WHITE TOWNSHIP -- Kenny J. 'Perry' Bertholf, 80, of White Township, died July 12, 2007 in the Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg.

Born in Blairstown, where he lived most of his life, on Oct. 4, 1926 to the late Raymond and Elsa Konkle Bertholf.

Perry worked for 41 years at the A& P Food Store retiring in 1989 as the manager of Belvidere store. An active member of Blairstown and Warren County, he served on the Blairstown Township Committee and was mayor for two terms. A former member of the Blairstown Ambulance, Blairstown Hose Company No. 1, New Jersey Firemen's Association, an Exempt Firemen's Association and Blairstown Planning Board. He also was a member of Blairstown Masonic Lodge No. 165 and the American Legion Post of White Township.

Perry was a Navy veteran having served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, the former Doris Bontz; two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Bonnie, of Blairstown, and Gary and his wife, Bonnie, of Bangor, Pa.; five grandchildren, Gregory, Brad, Brian, Kim and her husband, Mike, and Kicole; two great-grandchildren, Audrey and Landon; a sister, Clarice Bobbin of Morris County.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold, and a sister, Ellen Smith.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 18 at the Newbaker Funeral Home, 200 Route 94, Blairstown. Visitation was Sunday, July 17. Burial was in Hope Moravian Cemetery, Hope.
