Family: George Arthur Labs (b. 29 September 1913, d. 24 November 1998)

SonKenneth Labs (b. 1950, d. September 1992)

Biography

Violet May Fulmer was born on 12 November 1916 in Pennsylvania.1,2 She and George Arthur Labs were married in 1943.3 She died on 28 November 2012, at age 96, in Doylestown, Bucks, Pennsylvania.2 She was buried in Mechanicsville Cemetery, Buckingham, Bucks, Pennsylvania.2
Violet May (Fulmer) Labs, formerly of Mechanicsville and Doylestown, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, in Greenleaf Nursing & Convalescent Center, Doylestown. She was 96.

She was the wife of the late George A. Labs, who died in November 1998.

Violet was born on November 12, 1916, in Andalusia, PA, the daughter of the late Harry and Laura Fulmer and the sister of the late Harry, Arthur and Alvin Fulmer. When Violet was still quite young, her father left his successful accounting job in Philadelphia to try his hand at farming in rural Bucks County, moving the family from Andalusia to Point Pleasant, PA.

Violet married George A. Labs in 1943, just before he deployed to Europe as a technical sergeant in Patton's Fourth Armored Division. During the war Violet worked in a dress factory in Doylestown, and upon her husband's return in 1945, the couple lived in Doylestown before buying a 12-acre farm in Mechanicsville, PA.

Running a farm during the 50's and 60's with thousands of chickens, a cow and four dogs was a lot of work. Along with raising her two sons, Wayne and the late Kenneth Labs, Violet gathered and graded eggs, helped maintain an acre and a half of produce gardens, canned and froze fruits and vegetables, sold produce and eggs to customers who stopped by and enjoyed sewing, both as a hobby and a necessity.

During these years, she and her husband worked along with several neighbors to re-open the Mechanicsville Chapel on Durham Road, securing its independence from the United Presbyterian Church in Doylestown where the building had once served as a satellite church for farming families in the region. During this time George was instrumental in making various improvements to the church building, while Violet helped out with Sunday school, church dinners and special occasions. She also hosted dinners for ministers, church members, family and friends.

Around 1970, George closed the farm, and went to work at Agway in Dublin and later at the Dublin Farm Bureau where he was manager. During these years Violet remained active with the women's group at the chapel and continued gardening, canning and sewing.

In the early 90s, Violet and George sold the family farm and moved into Doylestown Boro, where they enjoyed a simpler lifestyle with a small garden. As George's health began to fail, they moved to New Seasons Assisted Living in New Britain, PA. After George passed away in November 1998, Violet remained at New Seasons until her health began to fail in the late 2000s. She then moved to Greenleaf Nursing Home on South Main Street in Doylestown where she died on Thursday, November 28, 2012, at the age of 96.

Violet was survived by her son, Wayne G. Labs and his wife Nancy, and a grandson, Jonathan R., all of Doylestown; and a daughter-in-law, Joanne Labs, of Stamford, CT. Violet was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth B. Labs, in September 1992, and three brothers, Alvin, Harry and Arthur Fulmer.

Her Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, in the Bernard Suess Funeral Home, Perkasie, PA. Interment followed in Mechanicsville Cemetery.
