1 Mrs. Betty R. Carlson, Brooklyn, Susquehanna County correspondent for The Tribune, died Monday morning in Asa Park Manor Nursing Home, Montrose. She was 86.
Born in Pittston, Mrs. Carlson was believed to be the oldest newspaper correspondent in Pennsylvania. Despite ill health she remained active in her position, calling in her last story to The Tribune a week ago. she served as correspondent for more than 15 years.
She came to Susquehanna County in 1944 with her husband, the late Rudolph F. Carlson, who died in 1955, from South Ozone Park, Long Island. A retired nurse, having competed training in 1919 from Children's Homeophatic Hospital, Philadelphia, she received additional training at Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a private duty nurse in the Brooklyn, Pa., area and also served as Susquehanna County correspondent for the Binghamton Sun-Bulletin.
She was an active member of the Brooklyn United Methodist Church and an honoray member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross, a member of the board of directors of the American Cancer Society, Mental Health and Mental Retardation Society and the Humane Society.
Along with having two sons of her own, Mrs. Carlson was also a foster mother to four children from New York. Two girls from a Brooklyn, N.Y. orphanage and two boys from a New York City broken home were taken in and raised by Mr. and Mrs. Carlson.
Her two sons that survive are Rev. Paul R. Carlson, Scranton, Donald F. Carlson, White Plains, N.Y. Also surviving are two grandsons, Dr. Paul R. Carlson, Fort Pierce, Fla., Timothy Eric Carlson, Elizabeth City, N.C.; two brothers, Howard Robins, Lima, Ohio. Walter Robins, Orlando, Fla.
Rev. Paul Carlson is director of the local Congregations in Christian Mission.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. from Brooklyn United Methodist Church. Interment, West Side Cemetery, Brooklyn.
Friends may call at the Bartron Funeral Home, Inc., 74 Church St., Montrose, Wednesday after 7 p.m.
