Harold Hormel Whitcomb, 93, of North Platte died April 8, 2004, at Linden Court.

He was born April 18, 1910, at Ulysses, to Clarence R. and Jennie E. Hormel Whitcomb. He graduated from Ulysses High School.

On Sept. 11, 1936, he married Doris F. Allen at Kearney. She preceded him in death May 13, 1999. On June 7, 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Rhineland Campaign, earning a European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with a Bronze Star. He attained the rank of S/Sgt. and on Oct. 8, 1945, was honorably discharged.

Mr. Whitcomb lived in Grand Island for 31 years before moving to North Platte in 1973. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 34 years as a conductor, retiring Jan. 4, 1975. He was a member of the Methodist Church, P.R. Halligan Post 163 of the American Legion, and BPO Elks 985. He enjoyed playing golf for more than 50 years and had made six holes in one.

Survivors include his sister, Ahlean Galvin of Santa Maria, Calif.; and friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two brothers.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors graveside with the Rev. Steven Jergensen officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
