On Jan. 7, 1958, a school bus fell through the decking of a bridge spanning the Susquehanna River in Wysox Township and landed on the river bank 22 feet below, The Daily Review reported the following day.
The late Staley N. Clarke's photos for The Review of the accident, which appeared in newspapers in Los Angeles, New York City and communities nationwide, showed the bus left dangling at a 45-degree angle, said Dan Barrett, Bradford County's district attorney-elect and self-described "history buff."
The Review photos that The Associated Press ran of the accident "were as eye-catching as anything ever posted on The Associated Press," Barrett said.
No one was seriously hurt, since the water was low and the front of the bus landed on the bank of the river, Barrett said.
Barrett, a kindergartner at the time, would have been on the bus but his mother had kept him home from school that day.
"Had the accident happened 10 days (earlier), many might have drowned because icy, deep water was churning then over the spot where the bus ... landed," The Daily Review reported the following day.
Michael Bride, a dairy farmer in Asylum Township who was a second-grader on the bus that day, recalled looking out the window of the school bus and seeing the bus falling in relation to the structure of the bridge.
"I figured we were all going to die," he said on Friday.
"I started to cry (but then stopped) because I saw we weren't going to go into the water and that we just had to get off the bus. I saw that nothing really was going to happen."
Twenty children on the bus suffered minor injuries, and Bride had a cut in the area of his left eye, The Daily Review reported the day after the accident.
Many of the children tumbled forward when the bus fell, some landing on top of the bus driver, according to those who had been on the bus and were interviewed this week.
Bride recalled one of the older students, eighth-grader Francis Mosier, saying in a loud voice to keep calm and not to cry.
Jean Blowers Woodruff, who now works as a cook at the Towanda Elks Club and was a student on the bus, recalls it being "fairly quiet" on the bus after the accident.
"There was no big panic," she said. "I think we were all ... in shock. At the time, we probably didn't know what was going on."
The bus driver, 29-year-old Willard Ackley, was quoted by The Daily Review the following day as saying the older children on the bus were a great help.
"They kept their heads and helped and comforted the younger ones," Ackley told The Daily Review. "If the children had become panicky, someone surely would have gotten hurt."
