AGNES (MAISIE) WHITEHEAD
Born: Sep 28, 1917
Date of Passing: May 28, 2007
As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on May 30, 2007
AGNES (MAISIE) WHITEHEAD - It is with sadness that we announce the death of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Maisie Whitehead, on May 28, 2007 at the age of 89.
Agnes Robina Makin Kennedy was born in Winnipeg, MB on September 28, 1917 to Scottish immigrants, Margaret and Herbert Kennedy. She was the only girl, having three brothers. Her parents abbreviated Agnes to Nessie , but with their Scottish accents, her little brothers heard and called her Maisie , the name by which most came to know her. To a fortunate few, she was Mum or Nana . For 43 years, Maisie was the loving wife of Descombe George (Deck) Whitehead. They married in Winnipeg in 1936 and moved to Saskatoon with their first born, Rhona, in 1939. Maisie was a wonderful mother and soon added two more, Marilyn and Bob. Once the kids were in school, Maisie started a 23 year career with Eaton's, a job that she loved. Maisie was a generous and attentive hostess who loved entertaining either at home in the city, or at the family cottage at Pike Lake. She was a life-long, cheerful caregiver for her husband who suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis. In 1975 Maisie and Deck joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which eventually led to Maisie serving a two year mission at the Mormon Temple in Washington, DC. After that, Maisie became a world traveller and loved telling of her visits to 16 different countries on five continents. Although failing in health in her later years, Maisie continued to present herself as the very beautiful and dignified lady that she always was.
Maisie was predeceased by her husband Deck, her parents and siblings, and one great-granddaughter, Jessica Wasden.
She is survived by her three children, Rhona (Ray) Wasden (Okotoks, AB) , Marilyn (Jack) May (Saskatoon), and Robert Whitehead (Calgary, AB). Additionally, Maisie is survived by her grandchildren, Mark (Theresa) Wasden (Airdrie, AB), Maureen Burt (Okotoks), Margo (Darren) Turner (Kelowna, BC), and Matthew (Kim) Wasden (Greeley, CO), Janice Poniatowski (Saskatoon), Jordan Poniatowski (Toronto, ON), Page Newton (Cabri, SK), Shannon (Shane) Wolfe (Sundre, AB); plus 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
We sincerely thank the staff of Sunnyside Adventist Care Centre for the wonderful care and respect given to Maisie. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1429 10th St. E., Saskatoon. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
