The Expositor, Tuesday, November 7, 1989

Howard Johnson was Musician and Friend

The Brantford music community lost a favorite son when it lost Howard "Red" Johnson, a friend and associate says. Mr. Johnson, who was active in local music for more than 60 years, died suddenly at Brantford General Hospital on Sunday. He was 77.
Fred Nicholas, musical director of the Telephone City Musical Society concert band, said he first met his trombonist friend in the second year of the Great Depression "when everyone was making their own fun." The seeds of a long-time friendship were planted in a Sunday school musical group called the Balfour Boys Orchestra.
In the years that followed, Mr. Johnson became increasing involved in music. He played in a number of groups, including the Tim Eaton Orchestra and the musical society's concert band.
Mr. Nicholas said his friend wil be missed. "He was one of the stalwarts. You could always depend on Howard," Mr. Nicholas said. "He would never let you down as a musician and a friend."
Although Mr. Johnson spent much of his spare time in musical pursuits, he never took up playing full time. He earned his living in the composing room of The Expositor during a 50-year career.
The trombonist was an officer and life member of the Brantford Musicians' Association, a member of Local 467 of the American Federation of Musicians and a life member of the Telephone city Musical Society.
Mr. Johnson, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 90, served with the Dufferin-Haldimand Rifles during the Second World War. He played in almost every province with a Canadian Army band while he was in the service, from 1940 to 1945. He was virtually a fixture at Brantford Remembrance Day services over seven decades, making his last appearance during the 1988 ceremony.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Elsie, his daughter, Margaret, his brothers, Ken, Bill and Don, and his sister, Edith Law. A funeral service was to be held at 2 p.m. today at McCleister Funeral Home, 30 Brant Ave. The family has suggested any memorial donations be made to the Lung Association or any other charity.
