HANNAH ELIZABETH WINTERMUTE
[info from Carol Hudson McGrath, Upper Peninsula, Mich]
e-mail: CMcg509@aol.com (December 2009)
e-mail: dickensCLC@aol.com (February 2000)
Parents: Abram Wintermute and Elizabeth Kilmer
Born: abt 1848. She is shown age 4 in 1851 census. She claimed she was born August 10, 1851, Malahide, Elgin, Ontario, Canada (wonder if it should have been 4 months, not 4 yrs, could be! RGM)
Hannah came to Michigan in approximately 1873 at 22 years of age [c.1851] (re: Emmet County, Michigan census of 1884, however this information is questionable due to Ellen Elizabeth’s birth date of 1875 in Ontario).
1900 census, Town of Leroy, Oscela County, MI. born 1851, Canada, to US in 1879.
Died April 12, 1926, Flint, Michigan. at her daughter's, Mrs. Charles Smith (Ellen Elizabeth Hudson). Buried at Town Corner's Cemetery (now Maple Grove Cemetery), LeRoy, Michigan.
Married three times: (1st) John Hodgson*, (2nd) George W. Congdon, (3rd) James A. Deering.
FIRST MARRIAGE
John Hodgson* (recorded as Hudson), marriage to Hannah Wintermute on April 24, 1870, Malahide Township, Ontario, son of Jonathan and Ellen (recorded as Helena) Hudson (Hodgson). John was born approx. 1849 at West Oxford Township, Oxford County, Ontario. John and Hannah Hudson had two children, James Edward and Ellen Elizabeth, both born in Malahide Township:
1. James Edward Hudson, born October 3, 1872, died August 15, 1950. Also went by name Ed Congdon, nickname "Paddy”. Had own team of horses, logger and lumber mill employee, Big Bay, Michigan. Married Frances Delilah Large (date of marriage unknown), had two children. Frances Delilah was the daughter of James Large and Arville Todd. Frances had 3 children from a previous marriage to Henry Jackson from Lower Michigan which are listed here.
i. Florence "Flossie" Jackson, birth and death unknown, died of diptheria at young age. ii. Arthur Jackson, born approx. 1898, died December 19, 1930 in Marquette, Michigan. Lived at Ives Lake in Big Bay, Michigan for many years. Carpenter and lumber mill worker, he never married. Lived with his mother and step-father James Hudson.
iii. Stanley Robert Hudson, born June 18, 1914 in Big Bay, Michigan. Married Violet Virginia Smart in Marquette, Michigan. Violet was the daughter of James E. Smart and Clara Belle Hays. Violet, born December 9, 1920 in Negaunee, Michigan was still living (c. 2009). Stanley and Violet had 7 children, 3 of which are deceased. Stanley's occupation was Tavern owner and logger, well known hunter and sportsman. He died August 21, 1972 in Negaunee, Michigan in an automobile accident. Viola or Violet Hudson, birth and death unknown, but died at an early age.
2. Ellen (Ella) Elizabeth Hudson, born December 31, 1875, died March 30, 1959. Also went by name Ella Congdon. Married Charles E. Smith, April 30, 1901, Big Rapids, Michigan (Mecosta County). Charles was born March 16, 1872 in Green Township, (Mecosta County?), Michigan, son of Philo and Harriet Smith, pioneer residents of that vicinity. Ellen and Charles had no children. Living 1920 in Flint with half-sister Rose Congdon and her mother Hannah.
SECOND MARRIAGE
George W. Congdon, born August 15, 1840, Dereham, Canada West, died August 11, 1900. Married to Hannah Wintermute December 8, 1879 in Emmet County, Michigan. George and Hannah had 5 or 6 children, so listed, but the birth date of Mayme is in question and couldn’t possibly be Hannah’s if born on the date listed, due to the birth of Ellen Elizabeth Hudson 6 1/2 months earlier (Ellen Elizabeth Hudson’s birth date could be in error also). Possibly Mayme could be from a previous marriage of George W. Congdon but this information is unknown at this time.
3. Mayme Bell Congdon, born July 14, 1876, Columbiaville, Michigan, death date unknown. Mayme married George Blackmore and had 2 children, Isac Blackmore (deceased) and Irene A. Blackmore (Lamson) who is still living.
4. William Henry Congdon, born October 21, 1880, Emmet County, Michigan, died in 1964. Wife's name was Fannie (maiden name unknown). William and Fannie had 4 children:

5. Mary Anna Victoria Congdon, born August 3, 1882 in Emmet County, Michigan, died April 1897, at 14 years of age.
6. Rosanna Congdon, born June 29, 1885 in Emmet County, Michigan, death date unknown. Married Alex McMillan. No children.
7. George Arthur Congdon, born August 2, 1887, Chase, Michigan, died September 17, 1966. Also went by name Arthur Congdon. Married Ella Matilda Lysher, born December 19, 1892 in Albion, Michigan. Ella died April 24, 1974. George and Ella had 8 children:
i. Viola M. Congdon, born March 22, 1913 in Cadillac, Michigan. Married Albert J. McCann, born September 12, 1908 and died May 24, 1990. Had one son - living.
ii. Gerald D. Congdon, born June 1, 1916, died February 18, 1991. Married Amelia J. Smith on August 31, 1940. Had 5 children, one of which is deceased.
iii. Elnora Congdon, born January 27, 1921, died January 3, 1980. Married twice: first to Albert Leis (died 11/18/1975) and second to Raymond Jones. Elnora and Albert had 3 children together and Albert had 2 children from a previous marriage.

vii. Malcolm D. Congdon, born January 10, 1931 - still living. Nickname "Mickey". Married Josephine J. Edwards, born March 18, 1934, died October 19, 1988 (Note: Josephine may be his 2nd wife. Looks like Malcolm married a Sylvia beforehand and was divorced). Malcolm and Josephine had 3 children.
viii. Bonnie Louise Congdon, born September 1, 1935 - still living. Never married, no children.
8. Phillip Benjamin Congdon, born November 13, 1890, Chase, Michigan, death date unknown. Also went by name Ben Congdon. Married Hattie, maiden name unknown. Phillip and Hattie had 2 children:
i. Howard Edmond Congdon, born May 10, 1920, died July 12, 1993. Married Frances, maiden name unknown, but still living. Believe they had one son.
ii. Robert Congdon, birth date unknown. Married Dorothy "Dot", maiden name unknown. One son.
THIRD MARRIAGE
James A. Deering, no information at this time.
Hannah was living in Flint at the time of the 1920 census, 2nd Ward, sheet 18A, listed as widow, 69 yrs old, parents born New York (confused? tho' could be true), surname listed as Dearine in census. Hannah was living with Charles and Ella Smith and Ella’s sister Rose Congdon

Subject: Leroy Cemetery - Tombstones
I sent you an email in Sept. and asked you if there was a Hanna Deering in the Maple Hill (or is it Maple Grove) Cemetery in LeRoy. You said that there wasn't. Since then, I visited the cemetery on my way from Flint to Cadillac. I found Hanna at the foot of George W. Congdon's headstone close to the road.
- front row. On her headstone it says, "Mother" on the top and the year of her birth and year of her death. I also found two smaller headstones (one on each side of Hannah's) with nothing written on them.
Would you happen to have these headstones in the marker book and names as to who they might have been? If not, I can write to the LeRoy Area Historical Society or the LeRoy Library. Do you happen to have the addresses?
Thanks so much for your help,
Carol Hudson McGrath
