The following oral history is written by Nora Belle Berden Rawlinson (granddaughter of Mary Arabella Wintemute) prior to 1982: "William Wintermute, son of Peter Wintermute was born in 1795. He married Anna Groff. He was a school master and lieutenant in the British Army. He took an active part in suppression of the McKenzie Rebellion in 1839. Anna was a descendent of the United Kingdom Loyalists. They were conservative in politics and members of the Church of England and the political Conservatives. Their family consisted of Mary Arabella, William, John Colburn, Peter Henry, Samuel Jacob, Philip James, Eva C., and George. Mary Arabella married George Mater about 1846." Nora Belle also writes this about all Wintemutes: "The German name was changed from Windemuth to Windewood, and later to Wintemute and Wintermute. This family has been represented by substantial middle class people - farmers, tailors, wagon-makers, teachers, etc."

The first census of Garafraxa township, in 1833, shows William with 2 boys under 16 years of age. Philip and Mary do not show up on the census, but that doesn't mean that they weren't living in the area. The census taking at that time wasn't very thorough or accurate. William shows up in the Welland County census in 1871. From the 1871 Ontario Census, Welland County: WINTEMUTE, WILLIAM - Age 75 - Birthplace ONTARIO - Religion Church of England - Heritage GERMAN - Occupation Farmer - District 019 A 2, Page 25 15.

GEORGE HENRY WINTERMUTE
Parents: Abram Wintermute and Mary Elizabeth Kilmer.
Born: likely Bayham Township, 1839 (ref G/S), age 14 in 1851 census, born May 1837 (ref 1911 census).
Married: * appears to have never married
Died: 20 June 1923 in his 86th year, Malahide (ref Aylmer Express) (VRO #012665)
Buried: Richmond West Cemetery, Plot #77, (G/S) George H. / 1839-1923

It has been determined that the George A. Wintermute of Maidstone, Essex County
in the 1881 -1911 censuses is not the George Wintermute of Elgin.

1861 Malahide Census, age 25, single, Labourer working on farm of Heziakaih Snively.

1871 Malahide Census, George was shown as head of family and age 30 but was not married.
#5676, 1871, 25 acres, George Wintermute to William Wintermute (brother).
#5677, William Wintermute, life lease to Abram and Elizabeth Wintermute (parents).

1872 in Armstrong's Directory of Elgin County, Geo H. Wintermute is listed on Lot #4, Concession 8, Malahide.

In the 1878 County Atlas the East 1/2 of South 1/2 of Lot 34, Concession 8, is shown as belonging to G.H. Wintermoot. In the Elgin County Registry office, abstract of Lot 34, Concession 8, Malahide, South 1/2 Lot is as follows, Deed #3736, 30 June 1862, part of South 1/2, 50 acres, Wm Peacock to George H. Wintermute.

1882, George W. (appears to have been a title mistake as George did not have a son George shown with family in 1871 census). Edward sold that portion in 1883

1909, William W. sold 25 acres. End of Wintermute family on Lot 34.

1911 census of Malahide lists David Wintermute, head, born Feb 1846, George Wintermute born May 1837, Philip Wintermute born Aug 1838 and their sister Mary Hanes born 1841, all living together.

Biography

Lilly Maud Wintemute was born in March 1917. She died on 25 November 1918, at age 1, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada.1 She was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada.1
Babe Died From Burns Received

Little daughter of Mrs. E. Wintermute, River Road, the victim
Going into the next room for a short time yesterday morning Mrs. E. Wintermute, River Road, rushed back to her kitchen on hearing screams from her little daughter Lillie Maud, only to find the child's clothing a mass of flames, and the little one suffering terribly. The mother put out the fire and the child was rushed to the hospital but she only lived three hours, dying in great pain. With the baby, who was
a year and eight months, was her brother of five, and the two children were left alone with the tragic result. She was the fouth child of Mr. and Mrs. E. wintermute. Three other children are left to sorrow with the afflicted parents. The funeral will take place privately this afternoon from Beckett's undertaking parlors to Mount Hope Cemetery, and Rev. S. E. Marshall will officiate.

WILLIAM WINTERMUTE
Parents: Abram Wintermute and Elizabeth Kilmer.
Born: 19 August 1842 according to death VRO #012957. Born likely Bayham township and his obit does state he was born in Bayham Township. It is believed that there was an error in the 1851 census and that while age of William was given as 2 years, it was Richard that was 2 years and that William was actually 8 years.

Married: At age 24 on 11 April 1867 to Sarah Jane Sovereign (marriage records give name as Sovernty), age 23 when married, resident of Malahide and born in Bayham, daughter of Peter and Sarah (altho there were Sovereign families in Bayham in this era, Peter has not been found). Married at the Methodist New Connection Church (ref Elgin County Marriage Records, ref #13).

Died: 16 January 1928 in his 86th year at the residence of his daughter Mrs. William Firby, Concession 8. Malahide Township (Obit in 19 January 1928 issue of Aylmer Express).
Buried: Plot #78 (Firby/Wintermute) in Richmond West Cemetery.

Children: all born Malahide Township
1. J. Mahlon Wintermute born about 1869
2. Edith Wintermute born August 1871
3. Jennie Wintermute born 25 February 1875
4. Solon Wintermute born about 1878
5. Mabel Wintermute born 1880
6. Henry “Harry” Wintermute born abt 1883 (age 9 in 1891 Malahide Township census), tho' other records indicate abt 1885

William is shown in the 1871 Malahide census, age 27, wife Sarah, age 25, and son J. Mahlan, age 2, Weslyan Methodist.

In the 1878 County Atlas, North West 1/4 of S 1/2 Lot 34, Concession 8, Malahide is shown as W. Wintermute (25 acres). William sold this land in 1909.

1881 Malahide Census, William, labourer, age 39, Sarah age 36, Mahlon 12, Edith 9, Jennie 7, Solon 3, Mabel born August 1880, living next to his father and brother, members of United Brethren Church.

1891 Malahide census, family #384, William Wintermute, Methodist, farmer, age 47, wife Sarah age 43, Mahlon 22, Edith 19,Jennie 17, Solon 13, Mabel 10, Harry 7 and with them his father Abram Wintermute age 94, Church of England.

William went to North Dakota in 1894 (ref census).

The 1900 census Thingvalla, Pembina County, North Dakota lists William Wintermute age 53, to US in 1894, wife Sarah age 51 (more like 55), Mahlon age 31, Solon age 23, Mable age 18, Harry age 15.

The 1910 census Thingvalla, North Dakota lists William Wintermute age 65, to US in 1892, farmer, wife “Jane” age 62, married 40 years, 6 children all living, Mallen age 36 (maybe Mahlon whose age S/B abt 41). With them was Phillip Wintermute, William’s brother, age 69, farm labourer.

William and his wife were back in Ontario in 1911 and were listed living with their daughter Edith Firby in Malahide Township, Lot 107, South Talbot Road, as William Wintermute born
December 1845 and Sarah born March 1847.

His obit in the Tillsonburg Newspaper of 19 January 1928 stated that he had resided in Dakota until 5 years ago (which appears to be in error as he was back in Ontario in 1911). At the time of his brother David's death in November 1926 he was living in Malahide Township.

Sarah died at the Wintermute home on the 9th Concession of Bayham on 19 January 1925 in her 80th year and is buried in Richmond West Cemetery, plot 78 (obit in 25 January 1925 issue of Aylmer Express).

William's age was noted as 83 when he won the prize for the oldest person attending the Wintermute/Kilmer reunion in 1926 held on the 8th Concession of Malahide at the residence of Mr. And Mrs. W.B. Firby.
