Here is a memorial resume of Herb. I feel his presence always with me. Herb was one of the greatest few "old not bold pilots" left from War 2. He performed public service - missions of mercy so often today that they a re rarely noted by the public, but to the individuals involved, they have meant life itself.

He was a fixed airbase operator in Blythe and Chico. airports are valuable to a community especially during emergencies which no one can forsee. During floods, tornadoes, hurricanes or great snowfalls where towns have depended on the airport for communication, for food, for medical aid and other supplies, to spray and kill disease bearing mosquitoes. H e was called upon to photograph dangerous places for the highway depart ment.

One timer on a routine charter over Yuba City, when he was able to see a n enormous amount of outgoing automobile after an SOS flashing, he aroused the Sacramento helicopters, contacting Marysville radio which was located across the river from flooded area. He informed them that the river bank had collapsed and that Yuba City was being evacuated. Many lives were saved, and transported. Concerned relatives were also informed and helped. He was the "Red Cross" operating from Chico on his own. O f course, quite extensive articles in the Readers Digest appeared afterwards, but Herb Dennis was never mentioned. He reaps his rewards in heaven because he was a humble man and did his duty only.

A thousand and one things can bring you to your local airport when normally you will find a competent pilot eager to cooperate with you and get you on your way. Charter flying emergencies, like flying a banker for his keys which he has forgotten, as the bank had to be opened in the morning. Or for instance, a doctor's wife wasn't ready in time to accompany him to a large city for a physicians convention and he left without her. Despite her fear of flying, she boarded the plane and was she surprised--delighted--was the best way to go anywhere she said.

He was a World War 2 volunteer veteran--saved many a ship for Uncle Sam - -they are expensive you know. He was one of the six fellows started A. T.C.--Air Transport Command, during the war. He is one of the oldest airframe and powerplant license holders, having been certified by the Federal Aircraft Administration for the past 43 years. One of the first A & E l icense holders. He held a commercial pilot license for more than 32 ye ars. He held an A&P license for 21 years. He was at Blythe and Chico f or a number of years and at one time was a Piper Aircraft dealer. He w as past member of the Rotarians of Blythe and Chico. After the war, he was the chief engineer of the Spruce Goose, the only eight engine aircraft in the world, owned by Howard Hughes and housed at Long Beach. His ambition was to fly it all over the world -- but the politicians pickled i t (it was a political football). And last but not least, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol for over 21 years.

Survivors include his wife Anya, daughter Loretta, Son-in-law Frank Torres and two grandsons, four sisters, et.
