Samuel Davis Tyrrell
Birth: Feb. 11, 1923, Wainwright, Muskogee County, Oklahoma, USA
Death: Feb. 1, 2009, Muskogee, Muskogee County, Oklahoma, USA
--------------------
Published in the Muskogee Phoenix from 2/3/2009 - 2/4/2009
Sam was born February 11, 1923 to Percy and Bessie (Offutt) Tyrrell in Wainwright, Oklahoma. He passed from this life February 1, 2009 in Muskoge

Sam grew up in Wainwright and graduated salutatorian of his high school class. He answered the call to duty during WWII and served in the Army Air Corps as a Tech Sergeant in the 338th Signal Company Wing, part of the CBI Air Offensive Japan from July 1943 to November 1945. He returned to Muskogee after the war, married Catherine Croisant and enrolled at Northeastern State College. In 1946 he went to work for his uncle with Hurt and Tyrrell Construction building homes in Muskogee. Sam's crew built his own home in 1951. In 1960 he left independent construction and went to work for the General Service Administration from which he retired in 1986 as a carpenter-painter. While he worked in the federal building he remodeled the FBI and US Attorney's offices and added a federal grand jury facility. Sam has been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 55 years. He served as chairman of the administrative board and board of trustees at various times and head usher for most of his years at church. In 1956 Sam was asked to temporarily serve as the Scoutmaster of Troop 6 which was sponsored by the church until a replacement for the departing Scoutmaster could be found. Twenty years later a replacement was found. While Sam was Scoutmaster, the troop made monthly campouts and met at the church every Monday night not preceded by a campout. He was also one of the adult leaders for contingencies of Scouts from the Eastern Oklahoma Council that made treks to the 1960 National Jamboree and two trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. The Boy Scouts of America recognized Sam's service with the Scoutmaster's Key and Silver Beaver Awards. In his spare time Sam would do home repairs and remodeling for his family and friends. He did not charge nearly the going rate for his labor, if at all. He applied his crafts at the church as well. Sam remodeled the church offices adding cabinets and bookshelves. Sam expanded the choir loft and finished the choir rail. Later he extended the communion rail into the north sanctuary doubling the number at the communion table.

Sam is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine; his daughter, Cathy Tyrrell Hayes and grandson, Aaron Hayes; his son, Ken and wife, Kenie, and grandchildren, Will and Anne; his son, George and wife, Wanda, and grandsons, John and Andy and wife, Robin, and great-granddaughter, Lucy Claire; and his son, Paul and wife, Andrea, and grandsons, Caleb and Alexander.

Funeral services will be on Thursday February 5, 2009 at Noon in Trinity United Methodist Church with Reverend Mary Ewing officiating. Burial will follow at Ft. Gibson National cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.

Obituaries
Bill Haight

HAIGHT, Bill - Bill Haight passed away peacefully and yet unexpectedly at home on Sunday afternoon with his children near, just the way he always said he would!

Beloved husband of the late Helen (Keating) Haight. Bill will be forever missed by his children, Tim, and his wife Gail of Calgary; Tom and his wife Annette of Eganville and Laura and her husband Ken Corbett of Kincardine. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Peter & Kristin Haight and Mitchell & Samuel Corbett.

Born and raised in Aylmer, Ontario, Bill attended the University of Western Ontario and graduated with a Master's in Bio-Chemistry in 1947. Shortly thereafter he met Helen, pursued her with vigour and finally convinced her to marry him in 1952. They had 55 years together until her passing in 2007. His career was spent as a teacher and head of the Science Department at Central Elgin C. I. in St. Thomas. In retirement he pursued his hobbies and interests; travelling the world, enjoying live theatre, acquiring another piece of art, baking bread in the old brick oven in the backyard of his childhood home in Aylmer and enjoying the cottage on Fawn Island in the St. Clair River. Bill loved many things; his family and friends, classical music, heritage buildings, James Bond movies and single malt scotch. Lately, and much to his chagrin, he found himself devoted to Speed his Brittany Spaniel. After years of tolerance of the family canines, this was the dog that finally transformed him into a certified dog lover.

Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, November 23rd from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road N., London, Ontario. A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held Wednesday, November 24th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, 472 Richmond Street, London, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Thomas- Elgin Art Gallery or the charity of one's choice. Online condolences available at www.westviewfuneralchapel.com 9664702.
