She lived in Malvern, AR while growing up except for a short time in Hutchinson, KS. While picking strawberries, Leona met and married James Jackson the son of James and Donna (Faucett) Jackson. He was a cotton "giner" and they lived in McRae.

They moved to CA and stayed there only 9 months before Jimmy's father talked them into returning to Arkansas to run the Cotton Gin Company. They divorced in 1954/5 and Leona moved to California where she worked in a Creamery, then in a cafeteria where she advanced to Chief Manager.

In 1967, she met Lee Tate while playing shuffle board. On 29 Mar 1968, in Tijuana, Mexico, they were married. Lee worked at sea and we saw him once or twice when he would transit the Panama Canal.

Leona and Lee both retired when he had a heart attack in 1970 and was unable to ship out again. After living in Bellflower, CA for many years they moved to Desert Hot Springs, CA. They seem to love it there although in 1992 the earthquakes just about did them in. They didn't have any damage but they got very tired of being shaken up and headed for Jim's home in WA. When they left there they drove out to see Grace in San Antonio and when we stopped there in October 1993 got to say hello to them.

When Lee went into the hospital, Leona's children had moved her to an Assisted Living Nursing home just a block from Lee. So they were able to wheel her over to visit with him to the end. He was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Pacific Ocean. Leona is not able to take care of herself anymore but she sounds like her usual cheerful self, she doesn't like the Assisted Nursing home but enjoys the bingo and realizes it's for the best.

She always breaks out crying when she talks to me, on the phone, and when I ask her what she's crying about she just says "I love you so much." She has always done this as long as I can remember and we laugh about it as she sobs!

ZANESVILLE - David W. Holbert, 89, of Zanesville, died at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born on Friday, May 12, 1916, in Zanesville, the son of Carl and Myrtle (Barnett) Holbert and was married to Saundra (Shumate) Holbert.

David was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving four Bronze Stars in addition to several other medals.He was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and musician and retired from Mast & Sons Construction Co. after 46 years of service.

In addition to his wife of the home, David is survived by two children: David A. and Jessica; three stepchildren: Maxine Caliman, Gladys Kennedy and Ed Singer; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a special family friend, Wanda Farley.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his first wife, Lola Louise Mayle Holbert; three sisters, Samantha Holbert, Lela Gillard and Edith Harris.

Arla Rebecca ‘Becky’ Miller, 87, of North Platte, NE, died Monday, December 14, 2009, at Linden Court in North Platte.

Becky was born March 1, 1922, at Greeley, CO, to Oscar Dell and Margaret Mae Mallery Holler. She grew up in and graduated from high school in Torrington, WY. She was married to Bennie Qualls before she married Clive Root Miller on September 18, 1952. They made their home in North Platte. Becky worked at the North Platte Cafe years ago. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and was active in TOPS for many years.

Becky is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Don) Frels of Hershey, NE; her stepdaughter, Sandra Betz of Lancaster, CA; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Qualls of Trinidad, CO; her son, Milburn B. (Janet) Qualls of Cheyenne, WY; seven grandchildren, Jeff (Sheryl) Qualls of Houston, TX, Rod Qualls of Cheyenne, WY, Julie (Chuck) Kinnaman of Kearney, NE, Jon (Shelley) Frels and Jamie (Kerry) Frels all of Hershey, NE, Gerald Qualls, Jr. of Grinnell, IA and Mashelle Qualls of Rapid City, SD; 11 great-grandchildren; and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clive; an infant daughter, Sandra Qualls; her son, Gerald Qualls; her parents; five sisters, Recille Holler, Rozella Culver, Irene Hood, Althea Barrett and Shirley Lawyer; and a brother, Milton Holler.

A memorial graveside service will be 10:30 am on Monday, December 28, 2009, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell with Pastor Judy Gifford of Maria Lutheran Church in Hershey officiating. Cremation was chosen. The memorial book may be signed 8:30 am to 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 17th, at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore and before service time at the graveside.
