Esther Viona High
15 November 1923 - 4 March 2005
Esther grew up in Malvern, AR. After her parents divorce, she went to CA and lived with her father until he remarried then she lived with her brother Cecil and his family.
I can remember when Esther was about 16 and I (Grace Maryee) was 8, I wanted to borrow a hair ribbon of hers - Esther wrote up a contract for me to sign - I got to borrow the hair ribbon but had signed my very life away! Esther wrote, "Grace Maryee was a spoiled brat!"
After graduating from High School, Esther went on the road with Grace and Charlie for a season. When Cecil and Luella went to Panama she decided she preferred to stay in CA.
Esther wrote, "I worked on the USS Hope (a Navy Hospital Ship) and Eddie was on another ship where my girl friend was working. I had seen him on the dock and wanted to meet him - so my girl friend fixed us up with a blind date - two weeks later we were married!
"Eddie was in the Navy at that time, as it was during World War II, and he was at sea till after the war." After receiving his discharge, they lived in Artesia, CA where Eddie worked as a Butcher and Esther was employed by a Bank. They moved to Louisiana in 1963, where Eddie worked for an Oil Company as a Salesman. When the company was sold they decided to return to CA where Eddie was employed by another Oil Company and Esther went to work for the Bank of America.
They lived in Bakersfield, CA and in about 1985, they retired and bought a 5th wheel and did quite a bit of traveling - up and down the West Coast, to Texas and Louisiana.
Esther and Eddie owned a few acres of land on a Bayou, near Jonesville, LA and they went there and started clearing and fixing it up for part-time living. Then they decided to make it their permanent home and bought a double wide mobile home to place on it. They seemed to enjoy their life there and although they went out to CA occasionally to see their children, had no desire to live there.
At the end of November 1994 they went to CA planning to fix up their home to rent or sell as their son, who had been living in it, had taken a job in Denver, CO. On Saturday December 17th, Eddie got up and fixed Esther a cup of coffee and took it to her in bed, then went to get his. He fell over and died from a heart attack. He was buried in his jeans and plaid shirt with a canning jar (he liked his liquor and always drank it from a fruit jar, so Esther wanted him to have his jar with him).
Grace (High) Howe, moved in Jan/Feb 1996 from San Antonio, TX to Bakersfield, CA and is sharing Esther's home there.
Their children, Cynthia and her husband reside in Bakersfield while Darryl and family live in Denver, CO.
Esther's ashes will be buried next to Eddie at the Hill Crest Mamorial Park, Bakersfield, CA.

In 1940, Esther, 16 years of age, was living with her brother Cecil and family in Belvidere, Los Angeles County, California.

Grace Jessie High
21 October 1909 - 31 December 2003
Her family moved to Independence, IA for a short time then to Lonoke, AR. When she was about 14, they moved to Malvern, AR. Shortly before her 17th birthday she married Gus Baker and they lived in Malvern for the next couple of years where their twin boys were born in 1928, Alford and Andrew, one who was stillborn and the other lived for 6 hours. They moved to Fayetteville, AR where they bought a cafe (The Peoples Cafe on the square). They had a good business but decided to move back to Malvern and then to Longview, TX. They were divorced and Grace worked for a couple of years in Dallas, TX and then went to CA where she lived with Bill and Esther.
Grace met Charlie Howe, born 20 May 1893 in Estherville, IA, the son of John and Ellen (Carrigy) Howe. She had gone with my Aunt Ollie to sell chances - Ollie had lost a lot of turkeys and was trying to make some money. Grace wrote, "We went by a car lot where Ollie had a friend and I met Charlie, who was working for General Motors. I never had a date with anyone else after that and we had a good life, hard work and travel from coast to coast".
Grace and Charlie were married 25 Oct 1940 in Las Vegas, NV. They were to spend many years on the "Road", working Carnivals. They had many different concessions over the years - Shetland Pony rides (which I remember well as Charlie used to put me on one and lead it around. I thought I was hot stuff!), shooting galleries and etc.
Grace wrote, "Our carnival season opened in March and we worked North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois - moving every two or three days. One month we made 28 moves in 28 days. That's what you call work! When we closed for the winter we went either to California or Brownsville, TX, wherever it was warmest. In 1948, we bought a ride out of Salem, OR. Charlie had never driven a big truck so had hired a driver from Oregon - who never showed up. So Charlie drove the 8-wheeler and I pulled the trailer. Charlie didn't know how to back the truck so when he came to a low overhead he was stuck. Two men came by and backed it up so he could go around. About 200 miles ahead there was another low overhead - there sat the same two men and they got him straightened out again and showed him how he could by-pass it. We moved on into Missouri and sold that ride after two years, as it was extremely hard work, and went back to concession work."
"This same year, moving out of Wisconsin, I turned the trailer over. When we got it right-side-up one of the helpers wanted a drink of water. We always kept a 5 gallon can of water in the trailer. We got the can out (which still had the lid on tight) and opened it. It was half full of water, a can of tuna, a can of mushrooms and a pair of my pants - NO ONE DRANK THE WATER!"
"The Carnival work was hard because of the moving and long hours but we always had the winter to look forward to - No Work, All Play. In our later years we didn't move as much as we only worked 10 day spots and worked six State Fairs (of 10 days or longer). It was fun moving from town to town and we did a lot of site seeing. We saw a lot of things such as the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota."
The main thing that I remember about Charlie was his love of Catsup, he put it on EVERYTHING he ate. Someone once said even on Ice Cream!
Charlie died 5 Aug 1963 in Augusta, Wisconsin and is buried at Forest Lawn in Cypress, CA. After his death, Grace continued to go out on the road, during Carnival Season for many years, then retired to San Antonio, TX.
In 1992, Grace had a bad year, heart, eye and gall bladder problems. We went out to visit her in October, but when we got there she'd taken off with Leona and Lee, who had come from CA, to go see Esther in LA. Grace's neighbor told us that the week before she'd been up on the top of her trailer trying to fix a leak!
She loves to fish and did a lot of it at Esther's place as they lived on a Bayou. We visited her in Nov 1995 and she had just returned from a visit with friends who have a pond stocked with fish. She had a ball, all anyone has to say is "Let's go fishing" and she's off and running! She moved about Feb 1996 to Bakersfield, CA, where she's sharing Esther's home. She was a very special person and the whole family loved her.
Pastor Ken Armstrong Officiating at Graveside Services on 6 Jan 2003 *, 2 p.m. Grace was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cypress, CA.
* [assume the date for the graveside service should be 6 Jan 2004]
Charlie is buried in Forest Lawn, Cypress, CA

Lloyd BILL Espy High
7 September 1911 - 5 June 1999
He moved with his family to Independence, Iowa, then to Lonoke, AR and finally to Malvern, AR. He remembers doing farm work in Lonoke, going to Fairview School and says he was "a very bad kid".
Bill wrote, "When we lived in Malvern I used to deliver papers and had to go to Little Rock to pick them up. One morning I picked the papers up in Little Rock by boat - the highway was covered by at least 10 feet of water - they said it was the worst flood they'd ever had!"
"I had a variety of jobs: Worked in a bottling plant in Eldorado, AR, a Lumber Yard in Malvern, a Packing House, Pipeline work (where my brother, Cecil, and my paths often crossed - we both followed the Wheat Harvest each year starting in OK, then KS, NB, SD, ND and I think we went into Canada). At 17, I was doing blasting work for a pipeline company out of Blackwell, OK. Then worked for an aeroplane company and a Paint Manufacturing Company and then out to the West Coast where I worked as a Lumber Jack."
In 1931 or 1932, Bill was driving in Oregon and picked up a boy who said he was going to see his girlfriend. Bill took the boy to see the girl and when Bill saw her he wrote, "I knew she was the one for me! Esther was then cooking for 40 people who were working on her uncle's apple orchard." She moved back with her mother in Portland, OR and Bill went to see her. He wrote, "her boyfriend was there and tried to hit me with a baseball bat and I kicked him down the stair steps. We were both arrested and taken before a Judge who ordered Esther's boyfriend out of town!"
Bill and Eva Esther Peake were married 18 Jan 1932 in Vancouver, WA and again in Riverside County in 1939 (when they were notified that their marriage records had been destroyed).
Next, Bill worked for the Water Department of San Francisco as a hard hat diver and made the third dive on the Golden Gate Bridge. When he was diving in the Sacramento River, a load of gravel was dumped on him and ended his diving career. He worked as a shovel operator in Alaska and on the Metro Aquaduct (with Cecil in Rice, CA) then went to work for the International Paper Company in 1938, where he first started sailing - working on a Stern Wheeler on the Columbia River.
Bill wrote, "I started out on the deck department and after I had enough time I went to the Coast Guard Office to sit for my license and found out I was COLOR BLIND. I went back and started all over again, this time in the Engine Department. I got my Engine Department papers. I then got a job at Whitter, Alaska and ran a shovel in an underground tunnel for the Alaska Railroad. It was COLD UP THERE - minus 50 degrees! In Dec 1941, when World War II started I was working in Keswick and Shasta Dams in Redding, CA. Cecil, my brother, was visiting me and was flying my airplane when War was declared - when Cecil landed, my plane was grounded and the propeller and magnetos were removed. I joined the Civil Air Patrol then, so that I could keep flying."
"Next, I began working for Bethleham Steel, in the shipyard and had worked up to Superintendent, when Waterman Steamship Company sent their Superintendent out to San Pedro to inspect our work and they talked to me about going to Sea. I started sailing in 1942 and in early 1943 I got my Third Engineers License and in 1944 my 1st Asst. Engineers license and then in 1945 my Chief, Engineer license. The company would often send me to shipyards as Marine Superintendent for conversion work. While doing this I worked in shipyards in Portland, OR, San Pedro and San Francisco, CA, Mobile, AL, New Orleans, LA, Newark, NJ, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong and Shanghai, China.
"In 1947, when I was aboard the "Sparrows Point" we were hit by a Liberty ship at 11:09 p.m. Our ship blew up and caught fire. The Captain and I were in the water 9 hours - tied together so we could not drift apart.
"Waterman Steamship Company had 56 ships during World War II and I sailed with them until McLane Trucking Company bought them out and then they started Sea Land which I worked for until I retired. During my 30 years at sea, I sailed into every MAJOR seaport in the world".
We used to see him when he would transit the Panama Canal and was able to get off the ship. Esther, in the meantime, had lived in Long Beach, CA with their daughters. When Bill's ship docked in a US port, Esther would fly out and see him.
In 1972, Bill had a bad fall and spent 168 days in the hospital. He then retired. Bill and Esther bought a motor home and began traveling all over the United States. After several motor homes and many miles they have now settled in Lake Isabella in CA and Bill wrote, "At this time we have had 61 years of wonderful times together!"
In 1990, Bill's service with the Merchant Marine during WW II was finally recognized and he received 6 medals, 7 ribbons and 2 Presidential Citations, a Citation from the Coast Guard for the Mur Make Run and an Honorable discharge from the Coast Guard - with which he says, with a dollar he can get a cup of coffee.
In 1991, Bill had heart by-pass surgery and recovered very well. He and Esther visited Grace in San Antonio in October 1992 but since she moved to CA and is only one hour away they often stop in for a visit.
In 1997, Bill got out of his car to close a gate and when he went to get back in the car it started rolling and dragged him until he fell free and the car rolled over him, breaking his pelvic bones - he was up, and while not running, was getting along until his episode.
