Mrs. Foster was a member of St. Luke's American Lutheran Church and was born Nov 1, 1922, in Zanesville, a daughter of George and Eva LeChein Grandstaff.

Surviving are her husband, Charles L. Foster; two sons, Timothy of Franklin MA and Dennis of Sherwood Hills; a brother, James Grandstaff of Flint Ridge; a sister, Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Paul of Chandlersville; and two grandchildren.

INDEPENDENCE - Charles A. Halvorson, 71, of Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness.

He was born May 7, 1938, in Elmwood Park, Ill., son of Nels and Gladys Whiteman Halvorson. He married Juanita "Nita" K. Lewis Bresson on Sept. 29, 2000, in Independence.

Mr. Halvorson graduated from Harrison High School, Chicago, then served in the U.S. Army.

Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Claudette Close of Independence; a son Chris (LouAnn) Bresson of Independence; five grandchildren, Marty (Autumn) Close, Cindy Close, Katherine Bresson, Ashley Schuler and Anthony Schuler; four great-grandchildren, Matthew, Logan, Sean and Ryan Close; two brothers, Martin of Chicago and David of Independence; a sister Doris Nuss of Manchester; a niece, Denise Barker of Rowley; and many other nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: his parents; two sisters, Daisy Peterson and Evelyn Johnson; and a brother, Edward.

Memorial Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday, at Reiff Funeral Home and Crematory, Independence, with inurnment at a later date in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where their will be a 7 p.m. military service. Condolences may be left at www.reifffuneralhome.com.
