8 Civil War- Company B, 143 Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers.
5 George S. Snover was born on 4-18-1838 in Blairstown, NJ. the son of James C (1811-?)& Juliet (1834-184?)(Smith) Snover and grandson of John F & Sarah Goble Snover. After his mother died, he moved to Abington, Luzerne Co, PA between 1840 & 1850 with his father James. He grew up and lived in the area as a farmer for the rest of his life.
During the Civil War he served as a Pvt. in Company B of the 143rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. The history of the 143rd Regiment records one of the bravest commands of the war. No regiment that left Pennsylvania lost so many brave men. Out of 1,300 men taken to the front, 363 is all that returned to tell the story. Their first great engagement was at Gettysburg. The 143rd was the first infantry to reach the field and formed a support for Buford's guns. The second and third day they were in the Union line on Cemetery Hill under Hancock, occupying part of the depression between Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge. The third day they rushed out on Pickett's flank and help break his charge into disorder.
Their next bloody struggle was in the Wilderness in May 1864. At the battle of Laurel Hill in the wilderness campaign the 143rd took part in a number of heroic charges and suffered terribly. The battles of the Wilderness and Gettysburg reduced the 143rd to such a small number as few regiments can claim. George S Snover was one of the few to return home.
He married 1st about 1857 Mary Kresge and had a total of 9 children. After Mary died in 1909 he married 2nd on 11-8-1910, Mrs Sarah (Place) Rought born 1848. George died at Mill City, Wyoming Co PA on 3-20-1913 and is buried in the Newton, PA cemetery.
