Biography

Wanda Lurene Askew was born on 28 October 1926 in McCleansboro, Illinois. She and John Sophus Olson were married on 13 January 1946 in Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota. She died on 8 April 2012, at age 85, in Polson, Flathead, Montana. She was buried on 23 June 2012 in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota, Cremated.2
Wanda Lurene Askew was a Northern Pacific Telegraph Operator. Wanda Lurene Olson of Polson, Montana, died early in the morning of Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012 at St. Luke Extended Care in Ronan at the age of 85.

Wanda was the first child of Joseph "Louis" and Nellie K. Askew in McCleansboro, Illinois on October 28, 1926. He brother James ("Larry") was born 17 years later. When Wanda was 2, the family moved to Werner, ND, and later to Dawson ND, where her father worked for the Northern Pacific RR. While still in HS, Wanda learned telegraphy skills from her father, and she worked as a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific RR while in HS and for a short time after she graduated. It was during that time that she met and fell in love with a young RR conductor named John Sophus Olson.

After a short courtship, she and John were married in Jamestown, ND on January 13, 1946, and they promptly moved into the Olson Hotel, which John had purchased during their courtship. A 25 room hotel built in the early 1900's. It was to be their first home for the next 26 years. John continued his RR career while Wanda balanced the management of the hotel with starting a family. In quick succession 3 young children were born to the enterprising couple.

When John was out on the road with his RR job, Wanda had back-up assistance from John's mother, Ruth, wo resided in a basement apartment of the hotel.

They sold the hotel in 1972 and moved into a privae residence on the hills overlooking Jamestown- and for the first time in their married lives had a living room without an adjacent hotel lobby.

Wanda was skilled needle-pointer who made beautiful wall hangings, decorative pillows and Christmas stockings for everyone in the family. She was also well-known for her home-cooking, especially her potatoe salad, rosettes, and her baked beans.

While Wanda's favorite way to spent time was being at home, working in the yard, she and John enjoyed their winters in Port Charlotte, Florida for many years after John retired. In 1998 they took the "trip of a lifetime" to Norway and Sweden with John's sister, Charlotte, and reconnected with their overseas relatives and heritage.

Her loving husband John passed away in June 2006. Wanda lived in Jamestown until June 2010 when she moved to Edgewood Village in Bismark, ND, to be closer to her son Kelly and family. The following June she moved to The Retreat in Polson MT to be near her daughter, Linda and family.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, and her son Jeffery Lynn and her step-mother, Ellen Askew.

Survivors include children, Linda (Ron) Davis, of Polson, MT; Kelly (Linda) Olson, of Perham MN; brother James Lawrence Askew of Akley MN; half brothers, Wiley (Chris) Askew of Rochester, MN; Wayne (Cherie) Askew of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law, Charlotte E. Olson of Alexandria, VA; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Olson of Bismark, ND; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place, and familly graveside services will be at Highland Home Cemetery in Jamstown ND, on Saturday June 23, 2012

A memorial lunch reception for family and friends will be held at the Buffalo City Grille following the service.
