Betty Lou (Tompkins) Mohan, a Prineville resident since 1955, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. She was 86 years old.
Betty was born September 26, 1924 in Monroe City, Mo. to Neale & Alberta (Munson) Tompkins. She and her younger brother Jack grew up in Hannibal, Mo. Growing up in the depression was made a little easier with the support of their extended family in Hannibal.
After graduation from high school in Hannibal in 1942, her family left Hannibal for Portland, where her father Neale worked in the Swan Island Shipyards and her mother Alberta worked for Sears. Betty found employment with the telephone company as a switchboard operator.
Betty met Joseph Mohan when he returned to Portland from serving on Guadalcanal, in the U.S. Army. They married in 1946 and moved down to near Gilchrist where they lived in the Shelvin Hixson logging camp. After moving to Lakeview, son Mike was born in 1954. In 1955, they moved to Prineville, where son Kevin joined the family in 1956.
While raising her children, Betty was very involved in her sons' activities, and served as a Cub Scout Den leader. Betty also worked outside the home at the Rare Bird Antique Store and at the Village Belle dress shop. She went to work for Ruth McKenzie at the Posie Shoppe in 1967, and then purchased the business from Ruth in 1969. Betty operated the business for the next 28 years until her retirement, when she sold the shop to her daughter-in-law Donna Mohan and Donna's sister Judy Holliday, thereby keeping the business in the family.
Retirement gave Betty more time to play bridge and travel, taking several trips back to Hannibal where family still remains. She also enjoyed reading, visiting with friends, gardening and crafts. One of her greatest joys over the years was to enter baked goods, floral arrangements, and craft projects in the Crook County Fair garnering many blue ribbons, Judge's Choice ribbons, and Best of Show ribbons for her efforts. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and longtime member of the Prineville Soroptimist Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Mohan, and her brother Jack Tompkins.
Betty is survived by her sons, Mike (Donna) of Powell Butte, Kevin (Patricia) of Port Orchard, Wash.; grandchildren, Lauren Klontz(Nathan), Justin Mohan (Sara), Melissa Mohan, and Samantha Mohan; great-granddaughter, Presley Klontz; nephew, Mark Tompkins (Laurie) and niece, Laura Donohue (John).
