SPARTA - Lucy Vaughan Bennett, 93, died at home on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lafayette, she moved to Sparta more than 69 years ago.
Mrs. Bennett was a wife, mother, and homemaker. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, F.W. Bennett and Son Excavating, Sand and Gravel in Sparta from 1938 until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newton.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Vincent Bennett in 1985; her parents, Judson V. Vaughan and Edna M. Simmons; two brothers, Paul Vaughan and Jay Vaughan; and three sisters, Marjorie Mahnken, Leonora Murphy and Frances Vaughan.

Mrs. Bennett is also survived by one brother, Daniel L. Vaughan of Lafayette; one sister, E. Marie Vaughan of Lafayette; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home at 156 Main St., Newton, (Iliff-Ruggierofuneralhome.com). Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sparta Presbyterian Cemetery in Sparta.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made in Mrs. Bennett's name to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Newton, or to the First Baptist Church of Newton."

She was the daughter of the late Judson Victor and Edna Simmons Vaughan, Miss Vaughan was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie Mahnken and Lenora Murphy, and a brother Paul. She is survived by two sisters, Lucy Bennett of Sparta and Marie of Lafayette. Two brothers, Jay of Bridgewater, NY and Daniel of Lafayette, and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Franklin, Miss Vaughan was a lifelong resident of Lafayette. She was a 1946 graduate of Newton High School and worked on the family farm until her retirement. Miss Vaughan was a member of the Lafayette Federated Church.

Miss Vaughan was predeceased by her father, Judson Victor Vaughan, on Dec. 20, 1963, and her mother, Edna May (Simmons) Vaughan, on Sept. 12, 1965. She also was predeceased by seven siblings, Paul Vaughan in 1993, Jay Vaughan in 2003, Daniel Vaughan in 2009, Marjorie Mahnken in 1985, Lucy Bennett in 2007, Leonora Murphy in 1999 and Frances E. Vaughan in 2001. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, Newton. Interment will be held in Vaughan Cemetery in Sparta Township. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
