Charles Francis Bassett was a U.S. Postal Carrier.7 Funeral Rites Held for Charles Bassett- was Rural mail Carrier for Past 14 Years- Death Ends long Suffering of Mason Postal Employee, Services Held Wednesday Afternoon

Funeral services were held at the A. B. Ball Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon for Charles F. Bassett, who died at his home in Vevay township Sunday evening. The Rev. H. J. Bancroft of the Methodist church was in charge of the last rites. E. A. Densmore, former postmaster, read the obituary and spoke a few words regarding the character of Mr. Bassett. Mail carriers served as pallbearers. Burial was in Maple Grove.

Charles Francis Bassett was born in Hudson, Michigan, July 13, 1873. When he was six years old he was let an orphan, his father and mother dying a week apart. After the death of his parents the boy made his home with an uncle, Lansing Seeley, going to California with his uncle and remaining there for some time. Later the Seeley family and the nephew returned to Michigan where the uncle passed away, leaving Charles Bassett at the age of 17 years to make a home for himself.

He was united in marriage to Lois A. Garrison on February 2, 1898. Four children were born to the union, Mrs. Gertrude Burwell of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Marjorie Hasbrouck of Jackson, and Max and Harry at home. Besides the widow and children there also remain a brother, Frank Bassett, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Snell of California, and seven grandchildren.

Most of the time the family home has been on the farm in Vevay township, three miles east of Mason. Mr. Bassett was appointed a rural mail carrier November 25, 1918 and served continuously since until a year ago when he became too sick to carry out his duties. He was the carrier on route No. 2. He served under three postmasters, the late Fred M. Hall. E. A. Densmore and Lloyd R. Doane.

Mr. Basset was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers association and seldom missed a meeting.

During his last sickness, Mr. Bassett realized that death was near. He suffered greatly and expressed a desire for death to end his pain. About a month ago he traveled with his son over the mail route for the last time.

Harry Bassett, a son, has been delivering the mail for his father during the past months. The arrangement will be continued temporarily, it is said. Provided the route is not consolidated with others or that a carrier from another postoffice is not transferred here, an examination will he held to fill the vacancy.

According to postoffice inspectors it is probable that a carrier from some other office will be transferred here to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Bassett's death.
