PETITION FOR LAND BY JOSEPH DENNIS, THE YOUNGER

Newark
20 February 1797

The petition of Joseph Dennis, the younger, of the Township of Humberstone sheweth:

That your petitioner has been eight years in the Provicence and lives on Lot No 15 in front of the Township of Humberstone, and having never received and certificate for the lot or any other land in the Providence, prays Your Honor would be pleased to grant him 200 acres, and also 200 acres in right of his wife, having married Elizabeth, daughter of John Wintermute, late of Butler's Rangers.

And your petitioner as in duty bound will ever pray

Endorsed: Rec'd 4th April 1797
Read the same day.
Ordered 200 acres incluiding his improvements and 200 acres to petitioner's wife, the daughter of a Loyalist.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the notes of Robert G. Moore:

Joseph Dennis Jr. came to Ontario in 1788 with his father Joseph Sr. and his uncle Ezekiel Dennis.

Joseph Dennis Jr. was the son of Joseph Dennis Sr. (1741-1816) who in turn was the son of John Dennis and Kezia Ball (Ref. Grace Noad). Joseph Jr.'s mother's name is unknown. Joseph Sr.'s second wife was Deborah Webster (married in 1781) . Joseph Jr. came to Ontario with Joseph Sr.

After Joseph Jr.'s death, Elizabeth was appointed guardian of their children. Joseph Jr. had petitioned for land on behalf of his wife as a UEL (daughter of John Wintermute, of the Butler's Rangers.)

In 1811, both Joseph Dennis Sr, and Jr. owned land next to each other in Humberstone Township, Welland County, (Sr., Lot 14 and Jr., Lot 15, Concession 1.

As there were no members of the Dennis Family in the 1828-29 Roster rolls of the Middlesex Militia, it would appear the Dennis family did not move from Humberstone to Malahide until after that date.
