Adam Gerhard was a Carpenter.2 Adam Gerhard and his brother came to Canada before their parents, traveling with an "Uncle's family
". The reason for coming so quickly was to avoid military service in the old country. Just who this "Uncle" was is unknown, but it probably was one of the Zumstein family. When the Gerhard family arrived they lived on land owned by Peter Zumstein, the 1/2 of Lot 4 Con III in Gainsboro Twsp. About 1860 Adam moved to Elgin County where he worked for William Dennis in Malahide as a carpenter. In 1861 he married Martha Jane, daughter of William Dennis and had several children there before moving to South Norwich in Oxford County living at SE corner of Lot 18 Con XII. In 1874 he moved to Fredericksburg (Delhi) where he built a home on Main St. and worked as a building Contractor.

Who was Christian Gerhard (parents Jacob and Charlotte) who married Elizabeth Jewell d/o John and Mary on Feb. 23, 1872?

Peter Gerhard, who was an Uncle of Adam, has also been found in Ontario. First in North Eadthrope, Perth County, and later in Normanby Twsp., Grey County, where there was a German settlement near Ayton and Neustadt. Some descendants spell the name Gerhardt.

According to the OGS Directory of Surnames-1995 Edition, Adam emigrated in 1855 from Bayern Pflaz Sand, Germany. He resided in Gainsboro Township, Lincoln Co. from 1855 to 1858; Malahide Township, Elgin Co. from 1858 to 1868; S.
