REUNION OF PEARSON FAMILY IN CORINTH

Interesting Gathering When Descendants Of Four Brothers Join In Celebration.

Nearly one hundred years ago there settled in Elgin Count y near what is now the village of Corinth a family by the name of Pearson, composed of Father, Mother and four boys.

The four boys, Joe, John, Thomas and Christopher, grew to manhood married and settled on farms around Corinth, with the exception of John, who made his home in Dorchester Township near Avon and Thursday the descendants of these four brothers gathered at the home of Daniel Pearson on the ninth concession of Bayham, close to the village of Corinth, in their second annual reunion.

The beautiful lawn surrounding the cozy farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Pearson made a splendid gathering place for the hundred or more who came from Snover, Cairo, Brown City and Detroit in the state of Michigan and London, St. thomas, Niles town, Putnam Harrietsville, Belmont, Springfield, Tillsonburg, Aylmer and around Corinth.

A most suptuous outdoor banquet was prepared under the large maple trees whose branches served as a canopy, protectin g the banquetters from the rays of the sun, and many were the fond reminiscences discussed and enjoyed together with the tasty eatables of every description.

After luncheon a program of music, sports and baseball was indulged in, everybody enjoying themselves, from the oldest to the youngest. Before departing a short business session was held and officers for the next reunion were elected . Mr. Ellis Pearson, of Brown City, Michigan the oldest man on the grounds, was elected honorary president; Earl Pearson of Nilestown, president; L.O. Pearson of St. Thomas vice president, and Mrs. Henry Pearson of Corinth, secretary treasurer.
Next years picnic will be held on the last Wednesday in June at the home of Henry Pearson, Corinth.
Sixteen years later, Daniel and Lydia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. It too was mentioned in the paper . An old article reads

CORINTH COUPLE CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING

On May 25, relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pearson to help them celebrate their "GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY"

On May 25 1887 Daniel Pearson and Lydia Thompson were united in marriage at St. Thomas by Rev.(Mr.) Hill. They have resided continuously in this vicinity. They have one son and five grand children.

The rooms and tables were beautifully decorated with snapdragons and tulips. At 12:30 o'clock 50 guests were seated at the tables and were served by six nieces. The afternoon was spent in music, singing, tap dancing and pitching quoits. A mock wedding, with Mrs. Delmer Pearson as the bride and Mrs. Kenneth Tribe (Hazel, sister of Ithmer, daughter of Irene and John Hubbard Pearson) of Ingersoll as the groom. C.W. Turnbull officiating. In the evening about 40 who were unable to be present in the afternoon arrived and spent the evening with Mr. and Mrs. Pearson. Many beautiful and useful gifts were received, among them a "Bridal Wreath" from friends of Ingersoll.

Friends were present from Delaware, London, Ingersoll, Straffordville, Aylmer, Glencolin and district. All wishing Mr. and Mrs. Pearson many more years of wedded life.

INJURED IN FIRE LIONEL PEARSON IS DEAD

Helped Rescue Victims of Delhi Blaze.

TILLSONBURG, March 6 1944

Lionel Pearson, a lifelong resident of the Corinth district , passed away at his residence, Ninth Concession Bayham Township Friday evening, following a brief illness. Mr. Pearson, who was in his 57th year, was employed as an assistant to his cousin, Henry Pearson, road foreman on No. 3 highw ay. Just a week previous, on Friday Feb 25th while on highway patrol duty the deceased, with Henry Pearson and David Langield, another highway employee, assisted in the rescue of Mrs. Ernest Lewis and family of six children from their burning home two miles west of Delhi about 2:30 in the afternoon. The three men succeeded in getting the seven occupants from the building, and then went in and extinguished the fire. The mother and three of the children were fatally burned.

From Grace Noad's notes: Lionel Pearson was assistant to his uncle Henry Pearson, Road Foreman on #3 Highway. On Feb 25 he, Henry Pearson and David Langfield assisted in the rescue of Mrs. David Lewis and six children from a fire in their home about 2 miles west of Delhi. Although they were able to get the family out, the mother and three of the children died later. After the rescue they succeeded in putting out the fire which had started from an exploding kerosene can but Lionel suffered from the smoke and fumes and died a week later. He had lived near Corinth all his life and the funeral was held from the Corinth United Church.

In the course of the rescue work and extinguishing the fire which was caused by an explosion of a kerosene can which was being used by the mother to boost a fire in the stove the late Lionel Pearson suffered severe injuries from smoke and fumes, from which he failed to recover, his death occurring Friday evening.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pearson who reside on the eighth concession of Bayham Township, near Corinth, the deceased has lived in the Corinth district all his life and was well known and highly respected throughout the community

JOS. PEARSON, CORINTH, HONOURED ON BIRTHDAY

On Monday evening a most delightful surprise party was held at the home of Joseph Pearson to celebrate his sixteiet h birthday. The house was tastefully decorated with autumn flowers, and many were the good wishes extended to Mr. Pearson. Before the guests were seated at the bountifully laden table Mr. Pearson lighted the sixty candles on the three-storey birthday cake.

After all had enjoyed the delicious dinner, the eldest daughter, Mrs. Nelson Boyd, read the following address and Mrs . Charles Landon on behalf of the children, presented her father with a leather rocking chair.

Not to commemorate Armistice Day, nor to enjoy with you our national Thanksgiving Day have we assembled here this evening, but to celebrate with you your sixtieth birthday.

It is most appropriate that we should gather in our old home for this happy event. It was here we spent our merry carefree childhood under the watchful eyes of Mother and you. In the pictures on Memory's wall we find your unceasing kindness is ever portrayed. And as we grew up, went out into the world, or to take homes of our own we have never forgotten what you mean in our lives.

We wish we could be here every day to show you how we appreciate your helpful interest in all that pertains to us. That is impossible; but we, in a small way can give tangible expression to the wealth of our affection that is in our hearts for you. We ask you to accept this leather rocking chair, and as you daily use it, may it constantly remind you of our best wishes for your health and happiness through many years to come.

Your loving daughters and sons, Viola, Elva, Earl, Chester, Shirley.

Mr. Pearson in a few well chosen words, expressed his appreciation of the beautiful gift and loving thoughtfulness of his children. The rest of the evening was spent in a happy social time.
