Mary Wintemute Mater assisted in the raising of her grandchildren, Nora Belle Berden Rawlinson and George Berden, since their mother, Mary's daughter, Sophie Mater Berden, died when Nora was 3 and George was 1 years old. Nora Belle fondly remembered her grandmother. Nora Belle participated in a lifelong passion of gardening and had remarked that she acquired her love of gardening from her grandmother, Mary Wintemute Mater. Photographs exist that show Nora Belle in group gatherings with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in Sanilac, Michigan around 1900.
---------
Regarding the name "Arabella" and its origins: Arabella is a lovely, feminine name whose lilting rhythm does not betray its medieval roots, Arabella has been well used over the centuries among Scottish and British royalty. Rarely heard in the US but an equal in every way to the mega-modish Isabel and Isabella. It shows up in Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers" and as a name for an old fashioned Scottish Viola flower. Unrelated to our Arabella of course, there was an Arabella Stuart, 1575-1615, cousin of JAMES I of England. Her descent from MARGARET TUDOR had placed her next after James in the succession to ELIZABETH I, and many thought her title preferable. Her marriage (1610) to William Seymour (later marquess of Hertford), who was also of royal descent, was viewed as threatening by James, who imprisoned them. They escaped, but Arabella was recaptured and died in prison. While Mary Arabella Wintemute's heritage is primarily German, her father and grandfather were British Royalists. This may explain her very British name.
The newspaper obituary for Mary Wintermute, in part, says: "Mary Wintemute was born in Haldiman County, Ontario, August 13, 1825, and died at her home in Custer, January 6, 1908. She married George Mater Mar. 2, 1847. Nine cildren blessed this union. In 1882, she came with her family to Sanilac County where she resided until her death. She leaves behind an aged husband, five sons two daughters, a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives, including four brothers. Two children, George and Clara, have gone on before. The surviving ones are: William, of Casper, Wyoming; Thomas, of Simcoe, Ontario; Mrs. W. Young, of Greenwood, Delaware; John, Jacob, Peter and Mrs. Robt. Redpath, of Custer. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church, Jan. 9, and the remains laid to rest in the Downington cemetery. In life she was always kind and thoughtful, and her greatest delight semed to be in doing something for others. Her departure has made a gloom spread over her family and friends, for her place is one that can never be filled. She has left us never to return, yet we will not despair, for she is not dead -- just passed away into the great hereafter. She has entered that eternal city of God, where no storms ever rise and pain and sorrow are not known. She is gone to await our coming. A few short months or years and we can lay down our burdens of life and bid this world adieu. This world is only our temporary home. There is a better and brighter one for the children of God, 'A home not built by hands eternal in the skies.' She has fought a good fight and has finished her course, henceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteous judge shall give her at the judgement day." (provided by Velma Nelson whose mother has this obituary glued into a book) Velma Nelson (velmanelson@webty.net), a descendent of Mary, states Mary's death date as January 6, 1908 and her birth date as August 13, 1825. These dates vary from other information collected.
