4 PIERSON, Iowa | William "Bill" D. Hardie Jr., 93, of Pierson passed away, Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa.
Services will be 11 a.m., Friday at Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Robert Blair officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Bill was born on May 10, 1921, in Rutland Township, rural Kingsley, the son of William D. and Hilda L. (Hinkhouse) Hardie. He attended rural schools in Plymouth County, Iowa, before graduating from Pierson High School in 1938.
In 1942, he married Helen James before he began serving in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in the European Theater with the 5th Armored Division, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. After his honorable discharge, Bill returned home to the Pierson area where began farming the land homesteaded by his grandfather, Thomas Hardie. Bill and Helen had four sons, Tom, Scott, Chuck and Allen who died during infancy. Helen passed away in 1984. Bill married Jean (Goddard) Ploen in 1985; after their marriage Bill and Jean moved to Kingsley. Jean passed away in 2002.
Bill was a director of the Pierson Farmers Elevator for six years, director of the Kingsley-Pierson school district for nine years, and past master of Rutland Lodge 607 AF&AM, where he was also a 50-year member. Bill was a longtime member of the Christian Church in Pierson, and upon moving to Kingsley he joined the Congregational United Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Tom (Barb) Hardie of Pierson, Scott (Sarah) Hardie of Winterset, Iowa, and Chuck (Jerri Jean) Hardie of Kingsley; two stepdaughters, Judy (Jim) Darby of Shell Lake, Wis., and Karen (Ray) Wilson of Halfway, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Tammi of Des Moines, Tim of Chicago, Ill., Josh of Norwalk, Iowa, Jacci (Aaron) Taylor of Winterset, Adam (Julianne) of St. Paul, Minn., Kyle of Sergeant Bluff, Kevin of Kingsley, and Becky (Ryan) Wiese of Brandon, S.D.; seven great-grandchildren, Peyton, Brooklyn, Lauryn and Kaitlyn Hardie, Hunter and Haley Taylor and Benjamin Wiese; eight stepgrandchildren; one brother, George(Geri) Hardie of Mission, Texas; and two nieces, Leslie (Marc) Stewart of Laurens, Iowa, and Lisa (Oscar) Nordstrom of Sioux City.
