John F. Snover was a Joiner/Farmer.6,3 John F Snover moved from New Jersey to Candor New York about 1830, with his parents Isaac and Anna Coursen Snover. He married Nancy, who was born in Candor in August 1828. He and his wife were childless, but did adopt a daughter named Lilly.

Nancy died in 1902 and John in 1904. His will, on file in the Tioga County court house, specified the following. First, to pay all debts and funeral expenses and second, to convert all property to cash and dispose of as follows:

1)$100 to be set aside and invested for perpetual care.

2) Remainder of funds, or as much as necessary, to purchase and erect a monument to myself and my wife as specified in the plan left by me dated 5-26-1902. The material to be dark quincy granite.

3) If there are any funds remaining, then said remains shall be given to the trustees of the Maple Grove Cemetery, to be used to erect a stone or brick receiving vault on the grounds of the cemetery.

John & Nancy Snover's plot is about 20 feet square with the monument near 18 feet tall. The full size statue in the middle is of a man wearing an apron and holding a saw in one hand and a wood plane in the other. This was to commemorate his skills as a Cooper, Wagon Maker and Carpenter. The stone receiving vault was also built but is currently being used to store cemetery records and maintenance equipment.
