1 Ervin G. Wood, 81, of Sioux City, formerly of Aberdeen, S.D., died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen, with the Rev. Hames Clark officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, with family present, at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
Mr. Wood was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Rice Lake, Wis., the son of Harry G. and Myrtle (Padfield) Wood. At the age of 4, his family moved to Stratford, S.D., in a covered wagon. He was raised and lived in Stratford until after World War II, when he moved to Aberdeen. He graduated from Stratford High School in 1939.
He married Clayonne Gubin on Aug. 30, 1941, in Aberdeen. She died Dec. 3, 1982. He married Shirley A. White Kleve on Sept. 15, 1984, in Canton, Wis. He worked for K.O. Lee Manufacturing in Aberdeen as an industrial engineer. He retired in 1985. They moved to Sioux City in June 2001.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving from November 1943 to December 1945. During that time, he was a prisoner of war from Oct. 6, 1944, to May 3, 1945.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. He was a lay minister for the church and taught Sunday school for many years.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 17 and American Legion Post 24, both of Aberdeen, and the American Ex POW Association. He was an avid sportsman, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed gardening and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Wood of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Gary and Mary Kay Wood of Sioux City; four sisters; a brother; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
