Aaron Gilmore
Obituary
Aaron Gilmore, Buckingham's eldest resident, succumbed to pneumonia Saturday evening, after three days illness from the disease. Mr. Gilmore had been ailing for a couple of years, and recently recovered from an attack of vertigo. Just before his death he summoned all the persons who were with him, all relatives, to his bedside, and bade them goodbye. Later when the doctor arrived he bade him goodbye, saying he was pretty poorly and could not linger long. About a half hour before his death he lost consciousness and died without a struggle. Mr. Gilmore was a Democrat of the "Andy" Jackson type and he enjoyed a wide acquaintance and held the implicit confidence of all who had business with him.
Aaron Gilmore was the last surviving member of a family of nine children and was a son of Henry and Mary Kilmer, (the name being spelled Kilmer during his boyhood). He was born in Tinicum on December 27, 1817 and was 84 years and 7 days of age. At the age of 24 he apprenticed himself to his brother, Peter, to learn the mason trade and was an expert in that vocation. He built the Frenchtown distillery, Upper Tinicum church, and numerous other stone buildings in that section.
On July 31, 1842, he married Margaret Hillpot, daughter of George and Elizabeth Hillpot. Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore were the parents of ten children as follows: Eli, Lucinda, Mrs. John White; Sarah E., Mrs. John Koch; Amos, Mahlon, Amy, Mrs. George Rice; and Eleazor, all living: Mary, Emeline and Harvey, deceased. Mr. Gilmore had twenty-six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gilmore's father fought in the War of 1812, and contracted consumption in that struggle, was discharged from the army and died about twelve years after from the malady.
Mr. Gilmore worked at his trade until after he was eighty years old, although there were short periods in which he would have to relinquish manual labor, but upon improving he resumed his place in the corps of Gilmore masons. About three years ago he gave up work alltogether and has since had frequent attacks of illness. He has lived where he died for thirty-four years, and since his wife died twenty-four years ago next May, he has lived alone, except that a family has occupied a portion of the same house. Mahlon, Mr. Gilmore's son, and his family now reside there. Mr. Gilmore has seldom left his home in the last couple of years, but Christmas day he spent with Eli and his family and remarked on his having enjoyed himself very much.
After Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore moved to central Bucks he started the mason business there, and his sons, Eli and Amos, were apprenticed to the trade. Eleazor also worked with them as "mason tender." The work done by the Gilmores was considered as of the best. All the mason work done recently at Wycombe was done by the Gilmores, including the Baptist church. Mahlon, who farmed Griffith Miles estate during the last years of the latter's life, moved to Buckingham last spring and has joined the corp of masons. Mr. Gilmore's grandson, Marshal, son of Eli, has also adopted the family vocation.
