"Charles Saums, son of John Philip and Lucy Stametz Saums, was born in Denison Township, Lawrence County, Illinois, October 5th, 1876 and departed this life at the Good Smaritan hospital in Vincennes, Indiana, on January 18th, 1945, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 13 days. On October 14, 1896, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Andrews and to this union was born eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, two of whom preceded their father in death. Mr. Saums spent his entire life in this community as a farmer, and of recent years as State Supervisor of Highways in seven surrounding counties. He is survived by his wife, seven daughters - - Miss Mary E. Saums, Mrs. L.G. Gognat, and Mrs. Charles E. Reis, all of Louisville, Kentucky; Mrs. G.W. Fish, Detgroit, Michigan; Mrs. William Lawson, LaFayette, Indiana; Mrs. Lawrence Lankston, Osborn, Ohio; and Mrs. Nile Foss, Salem, Illinois; two sons - - John C. Saums of Bridgeport, and Lt. Clyde H. Saums of the U.S. Army stationed at Dallas, Texas; one brother, A.J. Saums of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Mrs. Vada Bardon of Bridgeport; twenty-two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends. In his youth, Mr. Saums united with the Pisgah Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose."

BRIDGEPORT, ILL - Mrs. Mary E. Saums, 91, of Bridgeport route 1, died Thursday (3 Mar 1966) at 6 p.m. at Sullivan, Ind. Mrs. Saums was born in Lawrence Country on April 14, 1874, and she was a daughter of the late Charles and Evaline Shepard Andrews. She was the wife of Charles Saums, who preceded her in death in 1945.She was a member of the Wabash Presbyterian church. Surviving are eight children, Mrs. Lucy Gognat, and John Saums of Bridgeport Route 1, Mrs. Beulah Lawson of Shelburn, Ind., Mrs. Emma Lankston of Fairborn, Ohio, Mrs. Elsie Reis of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Bernice Foss of Pensacola, Fla., Mrs. Lizzie Fish of Atlanta, Ga., and Clyde Saums of Los Gatos, Calif; 27 grandchildren; and a brother, Edgar Andrews of Sumner. The body is at the Hammer-Nichols funeral home here, where friends may call after 2 p.m., Saturday. The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pisgah Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Byron York in charge. Burial was (will be) in Pisgah Cemetery."
