Bernice Grace Saums Foss, a resident of Gulf Breeze, FL died Saturday, February 14, 2004 at Gulf Breeze Hospital.

Mrs. Foss was born December 3, 1914 in Lawrence Co., Illinois, the daughter of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Andrews Saums who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in passing were nine of her ten siblings. Her devoted husband of sixty-five years passed away February 1999.

She leaves behind to mourn a brother and a sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Saums of Columbus, Indiana; four sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Nile and Clara Foss of Oklahoma City, OK, Roger R. and Earleen Foss of Murfreesboro, TN, Steven Saums and Joanne Foss of Gulf Breeze, FL, Michael Curtis and Anna Foss of Springfield, MA; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Mrs. Foss was baptized in the Presbyterian Church at the age of nine and remained loyal to Christian precepts throughout her life. She and her late husband were faithful and long-standing members of McIlwain Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, FL.

Mrs. Foss maintained unrelenting and consistent loving devotion to her church and family.

She was a sweet, gracious lady and an example to all who was fortunate to have known her.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel with Reverend Joe Grider officiating.

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Greg Foss of Louisville, KY, Brian Foss, of Harvest, AL, David and Alan Foss of Oklahoma City, OK and George Foss of Gulf Breeze, FL.

The family of Mrs. Foss wish to express their appreciation to the staff at the Villas in Gulf Breeze, and to Dr. Anita Westafer and the staff at Gulf Breeze Hospital for the caring attention extended to Mrs. Foss.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in the name of Mrs. Foss to McIlwain Presbyterian Church, 1220 E. Blount St., Pensacola, FL 32503. Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Ermel M. (Christy), five daughters, Martha Beck of Rochester, Linda Roberts of Portage; Kathryn Rundle of West Frankfort, Judy Stepp of Trenton and Mary Waggoner of Zachary, La; three sisters, Beulah Lawson of Shelburn, Ind., Bernice Foss of Pensacola, Fla., and Elsie Reis of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Clyde Saums of Columbus, Ind.; and nine grandchildren.

A granddaughter, a brother and five sisters are deceased.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pisgah Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Harvey Meckfessel officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetey.

Friends may call frm 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Cunnningham Funeral Home in Bridgeport.

Michael McGinnis was born about 1839 in Ireland. He and Mary E. Saums were married before 1862. He died on 3 June 1895 in Maryland.1 He was buried in Saint Patricks Cemetery, Little Orleans, Allegheny, Maryland.1
Civil War- 07 Apr 1864- 12 Jun 1865. Michael McGinnis was a Coal Miner. Michael McGinnis, born in Ireland, enlisted in the 143rd Pennsylvania Volunteers April 7, 1864 at Scranton at age 25 (signed with an X). He was captured 27 May 1864 and spent six months at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Sumpter Co., GA. He mustered out 12 Jun 1865 and returned home “to his wife and daughter, Anna.” The 1870 Census for Wilkes Barre P.O., Newport twp shows Michael MaGennis (a coal miner) 35, Mary 30, Annie 7, Mary’s mother, Mary Saums 69 and a boarder, Addie Fairchild. Michael lived in Luzerne Co until 1891, and was a patient in Retreat State Hospital (poor house) Nanticoke, Luzerne Co., PA. On 21 Nov 1892, he appealed to the Pension board stating his residence as National Military Home for Disabled Veterans, Montgomery Co., Ohio.

Theopolis (Theo) Smith was a Shoemaker.1 The death certificate from the Lawrence Co., Courthouse states that "Theophilus"Smith, born Jan 23, 1842 in Rushville, IN, died Nov 29, 1902”. Irene Black's book Lawrence County Cemeteries has a "Theo Smith - Jan 23, 1842 - Nov 29, 1902" buried in the Bridgeport City Cemetery. From that point on, Mary can not be located on the 1910 census with her brothers or her daughter and no cemetery record has been found for her so far.
