Private graveside services for Jerry Thiel will be Friday by the Rev. Jim Stauffer. Burial will be at Rowland Cemetery in rural Upper Sandusky.
Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
He died at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2011 at the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Upper Sandusky.
He was born April 5, 1927 in Upper Sandusky to Gilbert J. and Gertrude (Burks) Thiel, both of whom are deceased. He married Norma Quail on March 30, 1948 in the rectory of former St. Peter's in Upper Sandusky and she survives.
Also surviving are four children, Connie Denman of Marion, Doug "Stephan" (Brenda) Thiel of Upper Sandusky, Theresa (Stephen) Kahler of Kenton and Donna (Gregg) Leeth of Upper Sandusky; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and Madelyn Bixler of Lakeland, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Jane Kalb and a son-in-law, Michael Denman.
Jerry was the former owner and operator of Jerry Thiel Painting, having started the business in 1952 and retiring officially in 1998. He worked alongside his son for many years and he continues the family business today.
He was a member of the Transfiguration of the Lord Catholic Church in Upper Sandusky, and a member of the Amvets 777, American Legion Post 225, Moose Lodge 1093 and a life member of the K of C, all in Upper Sandusky.
Jerry was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was a graduate of Upper Sandusky High School in 1947 and then went on to College in Tiffin.
For hobbies Jerry enjoyed traveling with his wife, having driven to all 48 of the continental states, going to casinos, watching the Browns and especially the Cavaliers, fishing and spending time with his family.
