Mrs. Jandreski was a school teacher of the Bently School District, retiring after 30 years of service. She also taught at the Michigan School for the Deaf. Phyllis was the beloved Mother of: son, Dr. Mark A. Jandreski and wife Denise of Franklin, MA; daughters, Jane L, Stewart and husband Kenneth of Gwinn, MI; Julkie A. Convis and husband Mark of Flint; 4 grandchildren, Mark, Luke, Kallie and Ben; sister, Ethel Upthegrove and husband Jack; many nieces and nephews and friends. Ethel M. Upthegrove, 79, of Port Austin died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw. She was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Flint. She was the daughter of the late
Henry and Bertha (Clark) Soward. Ethel graduated from high school at Flint Central.

Miss Ethel Soward and Mr. John E. Upthegrove were married on May 14, 1941, at St. Michael's Parish House in Port Austin. The couple had been married more than 58 years.
Ethel has been a resident of Port Austin for many years.

She was the owner of manager of the Port Austin Theater, Putt-Putt Golf Course and Family Go Karts. She was involved
with many civic and volunteer organizations, serving as junior director of Michigan State Junior Women's Clubs, charter member of Junior Priscilla Club, member of Senior
Priscilla Club, director/coordinator of Thumb Ambulance, volunteered for many years as an emergency medical technician, served as president of the Port Austin School Board, was active in Girl Scouts for many years, was a charter member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla No. 1509 and served on the Division XV Board as secretary, a member of the Port Austin Fire Department Auxiliary and the Port Austin Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her husband, John E. Upthegrove, Jr.; three sons, John H. Upthegrove and his wife, Sharon, Robert B. Upthegrove and his wife, Linda, all of Port Austin and David G. Upthegrove and his wife, Shirley, of Otisville; one daughter, Shirley A. Krajewski and her husband, Daniel, of Sterling Heights; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-sisters, Carol and Bonnie Lent; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Eileen Doidge, Phyllis J. Jandreski and Ilah Miller.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Port Austin, with the Rev. Fr. Michael Bell, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a parish scripture service at 7 p.m. tonight at the MacAlpine Funeral Home Gage Chapel in Kinde. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
