susan.lawrence@dsbn.org

In 1922, Abraham Roy Wintermute (Roy) and Charles Milton Wintermute (Milton) became the owners of a garage started by their father, John S. Wintermute (b. 1862). The business, located at 808 Talbot St. in St. Thomas, Ontario, was renamed Wintermute Brothers Garage. SonGeorge Benjamin Clark (b. 1876, d. 29 January 1877)
SonGeorge Benjamin Clark (b. 8 November 1877)

Biography

Esther (Ester) Ann Wintermute was born about 1852 in Upper Canada West. She and George Clark were married about 1871. She died on 7 June 1933 in Mount Morris, Genesee, Michigan. She was buried in Tanner Cemetery, Genesee, Genesee, Michigan.
* [Esther's name does not come up in the earlier Ontario censuses (1861 & 1871) where you would have expected her to be with her parents. Other records, as noted by Bob Moore, seem pretty solid evidence though that she was in fact a daughter to George and Esther.] MJ

* [Referring to children John and Donald in Bob Moore's notes, with no apparent proof for them, no birth or death records, I am not including them. The absolute proof that they do not belong in this family (and also note that their mother was not referred to as Mary) is their being named in the 1880 census living in Speaker Township, Sanilac County, as noted below by Bob. Despite similar names, this is the wrong family. In fact George and Esther were living in Genesee, Genesee County in 1880 with children Jennie and George B. and Esther's brother Richard Wintermute. One final bit of info discounting them is the 1910 Michigan census where it shows Esther as the mother of 3 with 3 children living. I don't have that 3rd living but have found a third child, another son, also named George B., who died at the age of 1 before the birth of his namesake brother George B.] MJ

Iona Station, September 10- W.G. Wintermut, whose home is at Comber, was instantly killed yesterday morning by being struck by No. 17 M.C.R. express. The unfortunate man of late has been working on an extra gang at Iona, and the gang boarded in cars which were placed on the side track. WARREN “GEORGE” WINTERMUTE
Parents: Thomas Wintermute and Mary Ann Smith.
Born: abt 1865 (ref 1871 census)
Married: Ethel Best - where does the Henriette come in?
Died:
Warren was likely the "George W. Wintermute" who died 9 September 1903 in his 40th year and who is buried on 11 September 1903 in plot #47 in Best Cemetery.

Need to check to see if this was the same person as Warren in the 1871 census ?? (check VRO's). Not listed in his father Thomas's obit.
He was listed in the 1881 census as Warren Wintermute, age 16, at home with parents.
In the 1891 census of Bayham he was listed as Warren Wintermute, age 26, day labourer, wife Henrietta, age 22, children Thomas, age 4, and “Florenia”, age 2.
By 1901 looks like he had adopted the name George. In the 1901 census, Tilbury, Essex North, Ontario, George Wintermute, born 17 May 1863, wife Henrietta, born 27 October 1868, children Thomas G. born 30 March 1887, Florence M. born 27 March 1889, Camby E. (son born 19 June 1891), Viola R., born 2 September 1893, Ella V., born 28 November 1895, Minnie M., born 24 October 1900.
By the 1911 census some of the family was in Saskatchewan near Moose Jaw, Viola, written as “Liola” Howell, born Sept ?, her husband Charles Howell, born August 1881, their son George Howell, born May ?, and with them Minnie Wintermute, sister, born October 1900. Henrietta Wintermute born October 1868 was in the same area. George, born 1863, not found.

Children:
1. Thomas G. Wintermute, born 30 March 1887.
Appears he changed his name to Perry after the 1901 census. Perry was in WWI, enlisting on 16 July 1016, single and living at Archive, Sask. He was a private in 5th Battery CEF (G/S plot 21 of Richmond Cemetery, died 23 September 1953, age 66). When Perry enlisted at Weyburn, Sask. he said he was born 30 March 1887 and gave his next of kin as his sister Mrs. Charles Howell. He lived in St. Thomas in the 1950's at 64 Fifth Ave, wife Florence living there in 1968.
2. Florence M. Wintermute, born 27 March 1889, married 11 September 1907 at St Paul's Methodist Church, Aylmer, to James Henry Daley, son of John Daley and Mary Catherine Anger, born abt 1875, resident of Bayham, electrician. The St. Thomas Time Journal gives her name as Phlorena when James died 19 February 1925.
3. Camby Earl Wintermute, born 19 June 1891, at Corinth, Bayham Township, enlisted in the Canadian army in WWI on 8 Jan 1916 stating he was single, a farmer, and lived at Archive, Sask, born Corinth Ontario. His next of kin was Henriette Wintermute, his mother, living at Bohan? Sask.
4. Viola R. Wintermute, born 2 September 1893, married Charles Howell before 1911 and had son George Howell. Lived near Moose Jaw, Sask.
5. Ella V. Wintermute, born 28 November 1895,
6. Minnie M. Wintermute, born 24 October 1900.
