F. Jay Snover, 90, of East Stroudsburg died Saturday, Nov. 8, in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. He was the husband of Betty J. (Deubler) Tretheway Snover, at home.
Born on Jan. 17, 1913, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late Chester and Edna (Kaul) Snover and was a lifelong resident of East Stroudsburg. A 1930 graduate of East Stroudsburg High School, he was a proofreader for Hughes Printing Co. in East Stroudsburg for 44 years, retiring in 1975.
He served as chaplain at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg for more than 10 years; was a member of the Acme Hose Volunteer Fire Department, East Stroudsburg, for 60 years; and a member of the Firemen's Relief Association and helped found the Monroe County Firemen's Association. He was a State Fire School instructor, having taught in Monroe, Pike and Lehigh counties.
Jay was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 319, East Stroudsburg; the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1106, Stroudsburg; and the Four County Firemen's Association. A member of the Delaware Valley Area Council Boy Scouts of America, he served as director of leadership training and was a Scoutmaster in the Pocono District of the Boy Scouts of America. After the 1955 flood, he was appointed Civil Defense Chief and organized units throughout Monroe County.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, R. Morrell Snover of Saylorsburg; two daughters, Kathy Ingraham and Julie Cookery, both of Beaumont, Texas; two stepdaughters, Donna Townsend of Stroudsburg and Sandra Gerkhardt of Brodheadsville; a stepson, Barry Tretheway of Naples, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Paul of Newburgh, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret (Tough) Snover in 1990 and a sister, Bettina Nelson.
Acme Hose Volunteer Fire Department services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, followed by funeral services in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg with the Rev. Ralph A. Boyer IV officiating. Burial will follow in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.
A viewing will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Acme Hose Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 297, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
